Prehistoric Animal Name Generator
Extinct beasts from trilobites to woolly mammoths
Generate names of prehistoric animals other than the dinosaurs on the dinosaur page: real genera and common names such as Smilodon, Dunkleosteus, Quetzalcoatlus and Woolly Mammoth, plus invented genera for worldbuilders that carry the tag (invented) in the name.
About prehistoric animal names
This list holds prehistoric animals other than the dinosaurs on the dinosaur page. Of its 1,000 names, 870 are real: genus names such as Smilodon, Megatherium and Dunkleosteus, and common names such as Woolly Mammoth, Cave Bear and Irish Elk. The other 130 are invented genera, and each one carries the tag (invented) in the name itself. They were built for this page from Greek and Latin roots and nobody has compared them with the scientific record, so treat them as fiction and never as real finds.
The real names run through deep time: Cambrian oddities like Anomalocaris and Opabinia, trilobites and sea scorpions, armored fish and early sharks, the first four-legged animals, sail-backed Dimetrodon and its relatives, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, giant crocodiles and snakes, early birds, and the mammals that followed, up to the Ice Age. Where a genus has been renamed, only one name appears: Paraceratherium, not its older synonyms.
The endings help with an unfamiliar name. From Greek roots, -therium means beast, -odon tooth, -cyon dog, -hippus horse, -ornis bird, -ichthys fish, -suchus crocodile and -pterus wing. Entelodon, Amphicyon, Mesohippus, Gastornis and Sarcosuchus each carry one of these endings.
How to choose prehistoric animal names
- For schoolwork or a quiz, skip any name tagged (invented) and look up the real ones before you cite them. Confirm a spelling in a museum or textbook source.
- Building a fictional world? Take the invented genera as they are, or use them as models: pick a root for a trait or a habitat and add an ending such as -cyon, -ornis or -ichthys.
- Match the name to the age of your setting. Woolly Rhinoceros and Dire Wolf fit an Ice Age scene, Dimetrodon and Edaphosaurus a world before the dinosaurs, Eurypterus and Pterygotus an ancient sea.
- Megalodon, Terror Bird and Pterodactyl are informal names, so they appear here as common names beside Cave Lion and Giant Beaver, not as genera.
- Do not call every entry a dinosaur. Pteranodon is a pterosaur, Mosasaurus is a marine reptile, and Dimetrodon belongs to the line that led to mammals.
Frequently asked questions
Are all of these animals real?
No. 870 of the 1,000 names are real genera and common names, such as Glyptodon, Titanoboa and Archelon. The other 130 are invented and say so in the name, like Cryocyon (invented) and Nebulornis (invented). The invented ones were built for this page from Greek and Latin roots, and nobody has compared them with the scientific record.
Why are the dinosaurs from the dinosaur page not in the list?
The site's dinosaur name generator already lists real dinosaur genera, so this page covers the rest of prehistoric life: Ice Age mammals, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, early fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Early birds such as Confuciusornis and Hesperornis are here because the dinosaur page does not hold them.
What counts as prehistoric here?
Animals that died out before written history. Species lost in historical times, such as the dodo and the thylacine, are left out, and so are early humans and other hominins. No living species is listed either.
How do I make my own prehistoric animal name?
Join a root for a trait, a place or a habitat to a classical ending: -therium for a beast, -odon for teeth, -ornis for a bird, -ichthys for a fish. The invented entries work this way. Glaciomeryx (invented) pairs ice with an ending used for ruminants, and Abyssonectes (invented) reads as swimmer of the deep.
