Post-Apocalyptic Town Name Generator
Survivor settlements, scrap towns and bunker communities
Names for settlements after the end of the world, such as Hubcap Hill, Fresh Start, The Bleachers, Silo Juniper and Trader's Rest. The list covers scrap towns, trade posts, bunker communities, raider forts, farming communes and safe zones.
About Post-Apocalyptic town names
A town after the collapse is named by the people who live in it, usually for the thing that keeps them alive or the ruin they moved into. That gives the names a plain, second-hand sound: Girder Row was built from salvage, The Bleachers fills an old stadium, and Three Wells tells travelers what they will find there. The list is written for wasteland fiction, zombie campaigns and survival games, and every entry is meant to read as an inhabited place.
It runs through eleven styles: scrap towns, hopeful refoundings such as Fresh Start and New Roots, renamed landmarks, names read off broken signs (Elcome, Otel, Gas Foo Lodg), signs that survived whole (No Vacancy, Last Gas), bunker and silo designations, trade posts and caravan stops, raider forts, farming and water towns, outbreak safe zones, and places marked by fallout, plague, flood or ice.
The tone of a name tells the reader who runs the place. Shared Table and Harvest Home expect visitors, Fort Spite and No Quarter do not, and Station Marigold suggests a community that still follows an old filing system. The names are written in the general style of wasteland fiction rather than for one game, film or book, so they fit most ruined worlds you are building.
How to choose Post-Apocalyptic town names
- Name the town after what it guards. Water, fuel, walls and seed are worth more than ideals, so Deepwell or Diesel Springs tells travelers why people stay.
- Let outsiders and locals disagree. Residents may say Sunrise Commons while caravans call the same place The Heap, and the two names give you politics before anyone speaks.
- Use a broken-sign name for a town that grew without a plan. Nobody chose Harmacy or Owling Lanes; people just started saying what the wall said.
- Keep designations for places with an old chain of command. Bunker Alder or Shelter Four West implies records, rules and someone who still reads them.
- Match the disaster. Stilt Town and Levee Top belong to a drowned coast, Permafrost and Warm Room to a long winter, Dosimeter and Glass Flats to a nuclear setting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I name a post-apocalyptic town?
Start with what the survivors found when they arrived: a building, a resource or a sign. Then shorten it the way people do when they say a name every day. That is how you get names like Turbine Hall, Rain Catch and Tollbooth, which all appear in this list.
Can I use these names in a Fallout, zombie or Mad Max style campaign?
Yes. The names follow the general style of wasteland fiction rather than any one series, so they can sit beside a setting's own locations. Plain words do turn up in published settings too, so look at your setting's own map if a clash would matter. Scrap names such as Hubcap Hill suit a desert road setting, while Double Fence and Quarantine Gate suit an outbreak.
What is a broken-sign name?
It is a name survivors read off whatever lettering was left on a building. Elcome was a welcome sign, Otel a motel, and Gas Foo Lodg a highway services board. The signs behind these entries are ordinary generic ones, so you can place the town anywhere.
Which names suit a hostile settlement?
Look at the raider and warlord entries: Fort Spite, Razorwire, Choke Point, Tribute and Brigand's Bridge all warn a traveler before the gate does. For a place that is dangerous in a quieter way, a rule turned into a name works well, such as Curfew, Keep Out or Employees Only.
