Outpost Name Generator

Outpost names are practical first and poetic second. Real outposts were named by the people who built them, so they borrow from a landform (Bitter Creek Station, Sable Ridge Lookout), a founder or commander (Fort Drummond, Bent's Fork Trading Post), a function (Ashfall Listening Post, Radar Station Greyhill), or a mood the place earned the hard way (Cold Comfort Post, Widow's Pass Waystation). The type word matters too: fort implies soldiers, post and waystation imply trade, station and relay imply a job to do, and camp implies something temporary.

Genre shifts the vocabulary. Frontier and Western outposts use creeks, gulches, forks and wells plus telegraph and stage-stop language. Fantasy frontiers prefer watches, pickets, holds and tollhouses on roads like the Westmarch. Science fiction reaches for survey posts, orbital relays, Greek letters and star names (Tau Ceti Forward Base, Anvil Station Gamma), while polar settings favor ice stations and field camps named for glaciers or explorers. Post-apocalyptic outposts are named for the ruin they squat in: Silo Seven, Overpass Camp, The Rustyard.

The best outpost names suggest isolation and a reason to exist. A lone picket at Widow's Pass or a fuel depot on the Outer Rim tells players where they are and why anyone is there, which is exactly what a map label should do.
