Fire Goddess Name Generator
Hearth keepers, volcano queens and daughters of the sun
Generate fire goddess names for pantheons, stories and games: real goddesses such as Pele, Brigid, Hestia and Sekhmet, invented ones like Vaelith the Ember-Veiled and Andruna of the Sleeping Volcano, and titles like Lady of Embers.
About fire goddess names
Fire goddesses are most often keepers of a fire that must not go out. Greek Hestia and Roman Vesta ruled the hearth, and Rome kept Vesta's flame burning in the Forum. The Lithuanian Gabija was put to bed each night when the household banked its coals, and the Ainu hearth goddess Kamuy Fuchi was the family's link to the other gods. Pele makes and devours land in Hawaii, the Maori Mahuika kept fire in her fingernails until Maui tricked it out of her, and the lion-headed Sekhmet was the burning Eye of Ra.
The sun is a goddess in many traditions: Amaterasu in Japan, Sol or Sunna in Norse myth, the Baltic Saule, the Hittite Sun Goddess of Arinna, the Canaanite Shapash. Brigid, the Irish goddess of smithcraft, poetry and healing, covers the forge. About a quarter of the list is real names like these, some with a traditional epithet such as Hestia First and Last or Shapash Torch of the Gods.
The rest are original: single names (Ilumira, Lavessa, Tindrel), names with an epithet like Vaelith the Ember-Veiled, goddesses of a place like Andruna of the Sleeping Volcano, titles such as Lady of Embers, and names taken from words for fire and spark in many languages, such as the Hebrew Shalhevet and the Latvian Liesma.
How to choose fire goddess names
- Pick the register that fits her fire. A hearth goddess gets a short, warm name a child could say at bedtime, a volcano goddess is often spoken of only by a title such as She Whose Name Is Not Spoken, and a sun goddess carries a full court style like Queen Anatola of the Morning Stair.
- Decide whether she is a maiden, a mother or a grandmother, because real cults cared. Hestia and Vesta were unmarried goddesses and Vesta's flame was tended by the Vestal Virgins, while the Latvian Uguns Mate is literally the Fire Mother and the Fuchi in Kamuy Fuchi means grandmother. The Unwed Flame and Mother of the Hearth belong in different temples.
- Work out how a household speaks to her. Hestia received the first and the last offering at a Greek feast, which is the meaning of the epithet Hestia First and Last, and Roman families offered a share of the meal at the hearth. A title like She Who Is Served First teaches your players the etiquette before anyone explains it.
- Treat the living traditions with care. Pele is honored in Hawaii today, Amaterasu is enshrined at Ise and Oya is an orisha honored in West Africa and across the Americas, so keep them out of the monster and comic relief roles. An original name such as Tzirane the Scalding can play any part the plot needs.
- Build a ritual out of the name. Gabija of the Banked Coals comes with a real nightly custom, and you can invent the same kind of detail for Keeper of the Household Fire or Amaranthe of the Eternal Lamp.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the real goddesses of fire?
The best known are Pele in Hawaii, Brigid in Ireland, Hestia in Greece, Vesta in Rome and Sekhmet in Egypt. The list also has Gabija from Lithuania, Chantico from the Aztec world, Mahuika from Maori tradition, Kamuy Fuchi from the Ainu and sun goddesses such as Amaterasu, Saule and Shapash. A few figures, such as Sinmara and Glod from Norse sources, are giantesses or legendary women more than goddesses, but they belong with divine fire.
Are all of these names from mythology?
No, about a quarter are. The rest are original names such as Ilumira, Ondrisse the Oven-Born and Junivere of the Longest Day. An original name here may already belong to a character in somebody else's book or game, so look it up before you publish.
What is a good name for a volcano goddess?
Pele is the famous real one, and the list gives her traditional forms such as Pelehonuamea and Pele of Kilauea. For an original goddess try Andruna of the Sleeping Volcano, Velkarise of the Crater Lake, Strombelle or Ulwenna the Lava-Born. Titles work well for a volcano because people fear to say the name aloud: She Whose Name Is Not Spoken, Mother of Volcanoes.
Is there a matching list for fire gods?
Yes. Agni, Hephaestus, Vulcan, Xiuhtecuhtli and the other male fire, forge and sun deities are on the fire god name generator, together with original gods and titles. This page keeps to goddesses and feminine names, although titles such as The Vigil Light or The Unhurried Flame would suit a deity of any kind.
