Fire God Name Generator
Divine names from forge, volcano and noonday sun
Generate fire god names for pantheons, novels and tabletop campaigns: real deities such as Agni, Hephaestus and Xiuhtecuhtli, invented gods like Kaeroth the Ember-Crowned and Vulkaris of the Red Caldera, and title names like Father of Forges.
About fire god names
Fire gods fall into a few families. There is fire itself, like the Vedic Agni, who carries offerings to the other gods, or the Norse Logi, whose name simply means flame. There is the smith at the forge: Greek Hephaestus, Roman Vulcan, Irish Goibniu, the Finnish hammerer Ilmarinen. There is the keeper of the household fire, such as the Chinese stove god Zao Jun, and there is the sun overhead, from Egyptian Ra to the Inca Inti and the Aztec Tonatiuh. Volcano gods such as Sicily's Adranus complete the set.
About three names in ten here are real ones like these, some with a traditional epithet attached: Hephaestus Klytotechnes (famed for his craft), Agni of the Seven Tongues, Xiuhtecuhtli the Turquoise Lord. A few are not strictly gods. Prometheus is a Titan, Surtr a fire giant and Suiren a culture hero who taught people to drill fire from wood, but all three belong with divine fire.
The rest are original: single names built on hot-sounding roots (Ignarok, Moltharion, Vezuvar), names with an epithet such as Kaeroth the Ember-Crowned, gods tied to a place like Vulkaris of the Red Caldera, bare titles like Father of Forges, and names coined from words for fire in Old Norse, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Persian and other languages.
How to choose fire god names
- Decide what kind of fire the god rules before you pick. A forge god suits Borrakh the Hammer-Fisted, a volcano god suits Akhmar of the Burning Mountain, a trickster of brush fires suits The Laughing Wildfire, and a royal sun god suits The Noonday King.
- Give one god several names, as real traditions do. Agni is also Vaishvanara, Jatavedas and Pavaka, so your pantheon can call the same deity Halvarr the Sun-Forged in the temple and Stoker of the Sun in the fields.
- Remember that some of these gods are worshipped today. Agni and Surya belong to living Hinduism, and Ogun and Shango to Yoruba religion and its diaspora. If the story needs a villain or a joke, an invented name such as Rhazek the Blistering is the kinder choice.
- Say the name aloud before you commit. Xiuhtecuhtli and Hvare-khshaeta look wonderful on the page but are hard work at a game table, while Oruun, Zharun or Logmar can be shouted across a battlefield.
- Let the sound carry the temperament. Hard k, kh, z and r sounds (Kharazul, Zorvath, Tephrak) read as harsh and volcanic, while open vowels with l, m and n (Oruun, Lumakh, Solkarn) feel closer to a hearth.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the real gods of fire?
Well-known fire gods include Agni in Hinduism, Hephaestus in Greece, Vulcan in Rome, Xiuhtecuhtli among the Aztecs, Kagutsuchi in Japan, Zhurong in China and Atar in Zoroastrian tradition. Smith gods such as Goibniu, Ilmarinen and Ogun and sun gods such as Ra, Helios, Surya and Inti are close relatives, and they are in the list too.
Are all of these names from mythology?
No, about three in ten are. The rest are original names such as Vorakhan, Tharnis the Kiln-Hearted and Dessarun of the Nine Furnaces. An invented name can still coincide with one used somewhere else, so search it before you publish.
What is a good fire god name for D&D or a fantasy novel?
Pick by domain. For a forge god try Borrakh the Hammer-Fisted or Father of Forges, for a volcano god Akhmar of the Burning Mountain or The Sleeper in the Volcano, and for a sun god Halvarr the Sun-Forged or The Noonday King. If the setting borrows from a real culture, the language-rooted names help: Eldgrim and Logmar sound Norse, Fornacius and Caminus sound Roman, Atashvar sounds Persian.
Is there a list for fire goddesses?
Yes. Pele, Brigid, Hestia, Sekhmet and the other goddesses of fire, hearth and sun have their own page, the fire goddess name generator, with original feminine names and titles alongside them. This page keeps to gods and unmarked names, although titles such as The Unquenched or The First Spark would suit a deity of any kind.
