Generate Greek weapon names for a hero's sword, spear, bow or shield: arms of myth like Keraunos and the Harpe of Perseus, Greek epithets such as Nikephoros and Dolichoskios, and English names like Troy's Bane and Fang of Ares.

About Greek weapon names

Greek myth names its weapons far less often than the Norse sagas do. Zeus's thunderbolt is simply keraunos, the word for a thunderbolt, and aegis and harpe are likewise words for the things themselves. Most famous arms are known by their owner: the bow of Heracles, the shield of Achilles, the Pelian spear that Chiron gave to Peleus. A small share of this list is made of those arms of myth, named the way the poets name them.

The rest are new names built from real Greek material, and none of them is an ancient name for a particular weapon. Homer describes arms with fixed epithets, so a spear is dolichoskion enchos, the long-shadowed spear, and a sword is xiphos argyroelon, silver-studded. Single Greek words work as names too: Nikephoros (victory-bringing), Thanatephoros (death-bringing), Chalkodous (bronze-toothed), Astrape (lightning). You will also find Greek words for the arms themselves, such as xiphos, kopis, dory, sarissa, aspis and labrys, joined to English phrases.

English names round it out: gifts of the gods (Fang of Ares), arms of heroes (Blade of Diomedes), kennings (Troy's Bane, Sacker of Cities) and forge names such as Lemnian Fire and Chalybean Steel. Greek words are written in plain Latin letters without accents.

How to choose Greek weapon names

  • Match the name to the arm. Xiphos is the straight hoplite sword, kopis and makhaira are single-edged cutting blades, dory is the hoplite spear, sarissa the long Macedonian pike, aspis the round hoplite shield and labrys the double axe.
  • A Greek epithet is safest used alone: Nikephoros, Dolichoskios or Chalkokorystes need no grammar. If you pair one with a Greek noun the ending may have to change, as in xiphos argyroelon.
  • A name like Bow of Heracles or Shield of Achilles brings its legend with it. For a hero of your own, pick an epithet or a kenning such as Bronze-Biter or Rank-Breaker, which carries no back story.
  • Let the god fit the weapon: Apollo and Artemis for bows, Poseidon for tridents, Athena for spears and shields, Hephaestus for anything forged, Ares for a blade with a bad temper.
  • Say it aloud. Short names like Aor, Astrape or Melie work in dialogue, while long compounds like Teichesipletes are better kept for an inscription or an item card.

Frequently asked questions

Did weapons in Greek mythology have names?

Rarely. Unlike the sagas, Greek myth usually identifies a weapon by its owner or its kind: the bow of Heracles, the shield of Achilles, the trident of Poseidon. The best-known words, keraunos, aegis and harpe, are nouns for a thunderbolt, a divine shield or goatskin cloak and a sickle-shaped sword. Names in this list such as Nikephoros or Troy's Bane are new coinages in a Greek style, not ancient weapon names.

What are some Greek sword names?

The Greek words for a sword are xiphos, phasganon and aor, with kopis and makhaira for single-edged blades. Homer calls a sword argyroelon, silver-studded, or amphekes, two-edged. From the list, try Xiphos Argyroelon, Chrysaoros, Kopis of the Night Raid, Blade of Diomedes or Lemnian Edge.

What do endings like -phoros and -ktonos mean?

The ending -phoros means bearing or bringing, as in Nikephoros (victory-bringing) and Pyrphoros (fire-bearing). The endings -ktonos and -phonos mean slaying, as in Androktonos (man-slaying) and Gorgophonos (Gorgon-slaying). Chalko- is bronze and chryso- is gold, so Chalkaspis is bronze-shielded and Chrysolonchos is golden-speared.

Can I use these names in a game or a story?

Yes. They suit a hoplite in a historical novel, a demigod in a tabletop campaign or gear in a game set in ancient Greece. Names tied to a known hero or god, such as the Pelian Spear, carry their myth with them, while epithets and kennings like Stormer of Walls carry no back story.
