Paranoia Name Generator
Clearance-coded clone names for loyal Troubleshooters
Paranoia character names in the game's fixed format of given name, clearance letter, three-letter sector and clone number, such as Martin-G-ALE-5, Polly-G-RAF-4 and Thor-O-UGH-3, plus deadpan code names, team titles and experimental devices.
About Paranoia names
A character name in the tabletop roleplaying game Paranoia follows one fixed pattern: a given name, a single letter for security clearance, a three-letter home sector and a clone number, joined by hyphens. The clearance letters climb the spectrum: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet each give their initial, with U for the Ultraviolet High Programmers at the top. Infrared, the bottom rank, has no letter, so those names run straight from the given name to the sector.
The custom is to make the whole thing a pun when read aloud. Martin-G-ALE-5 says martingale, Polly-G-RAF-4 says polygraph and Noah-B-ODY-3 says nobody. To build your own, pick a word or short phrase, find a first name at the front of it, check that the next letter is a clearance your character could hold, and fit what is left into exactly three capitals. The final number is the clone you are playing now, so it goes up each time the previous one meets an accident.
Most of this list is character names built that way, spread over the clearances and clone numbers 1 to 6, with a few plain ones for the straight-faced player. The rest is table dressing in the same bureaucratic voice: invented code names for secret society cells, team titles and experimental devices.
How to choose Paranoia names
- Start from the word, not the name: write the pun out, then look for a first name at its start and a clearance letter right after it. Thor-O-UGH-3 began as the word thorough.
- Match the letter to the character's rank. A new Troubleshooter is typically Red, so an R pun such as Pat-R-IOT-1 fits a starting character, while B, I, V and U names suit briefing officers and other superiors.
- Say the name aloud before the session. If the table does not hear the joke on the first reading, try a spelling that sounds it out, the way Rick-O-SHA-1 and Nick-O-TYM-4 do.
- Keep the clone number honest. Start at 1 and raise it each time a clone is lost; arriving as clone 5 tells everyone how the last mission went.
- Use the code names, team titles and devices as handouts: a mission briefing reads better when the equipment list includes a Slightly Warm Pocket Reactor.
Frequently asked questions
How is a Paranoia character name put together?
Four parts joined by hyphens: a given name, one letter for security clearance, a three-letter sector code and a clone number. Jun-I-PER-5 is Jun, Indigo clearance, sector PER, fifth clone. Infrared citizens have no clearance letter, so a name like Mag-NET-6 has only three parts.
What do the clearance letters stand for?
They follow the colors of the spectrum from low to high: R for Red, O for Orange, Y for Yellow, G for Green, B for Blue, I for Indigo and V for Violet. U marks Ultraviolet, the rank of the High Programmers, and Infrared at the bottom has no letter at all.
Do the names have to be puns?
No, but it is the custom at many tables, and the best ones only work when spoken: Barb-B-CUE-2, Annie-B-ODY-1 and Ron-G-WAY-1 are in the list for that reason. Plain names such as Greta-G-TZH-4 are there for players who would rather not draw attention.
Are these names taken from the Paranoia rulebooks?
Not on purpose. The naming format is the game's, but the entries were drafted for this page rather than copied from the books, and the secret society code names and team titles are invented rather than the published groups. Nobody has compared the list with the rulebooks or adventures, and a pun this short can coincide with one used elsewhere, so treat it as ideas for your own table.
