Generate Shadowrun street names for deckers, riggers, street samurai, mages, faces and technomancers: punchy runner handles, JackPoint-style aliases, Matrix and chrome slang, plus full SIN names for a multicultural Seattle sprawl. Canon handles and hundreds of originals for your next run.

About Shadowrun names

In Shadowrun nobody in the shadows uses the name on their SIN. A runner is known by a street name, the handle a fixer uses when lining up a job and the tag that shows up on a JackPoint post. The classics set the tone: FastJack, Dodger, Harlequin, Hatchetman, Captain Chaos, Kham, Bull, Sticks, Riser, Netcat, Hard Exit, Plan 9, Turbo Bunny and Kat o' Nine Tales. They are short, usually one or two words, and sound like something shouted across a Redmond bar before it stuck.

Good street names grow out of what a runner does or how they got burned. Deckers and technomancers borrow from the Matrix (Zero Day, Dumpshock, Null Sheen, /dev/grrl); riggers and wheelmen from their machines (Pistons, Redline, Rotodrone); street samurai from chrome and ordnance (Razorgirl, Hollowpoint, Move-by-Wire); mages and shamans from their tradition or mentor spirit (Coyote, Manastorm, Wolf Father); and faces from the con (Honey Trap, Cover Story, Payola). Megacorp slang, street talk like drek and omae, and in-jokes about glitches and Mr. Johnson round it out.

The list mixes well-known canon handles with hundreds of originals, plus realistic full names for the SIN you hand a Knight Errant patrol: Seattle is a sprawl of Japanese, Latino, Salish, Irish-elven, Russian and African voices, and a believable legal name should sound like it.

How to choose Shadowrun names

  • Pick the handle from the character's role or a defining screw-up: a decker who lived through a dumpshock becomes Dumpshock, a rigger who loves her drones becomes Flyspy.
  • Keep it to one or two words so it works in voice comms and on a JackPoint post; long poetic handles get shortened by the team within a session anyway.
  • Give the character both a street name and a realistic SIN name from the sprawl's mix of cultures, and decide which contacts know which one.
  • Use Sixth World slang sparingly for flavour (Null Sheen, Drek Happens, Omae); one slang handle on a team is charming, four is a gimmick.
  • Avoid handles that are just the archetype (Decker, Mage, Samurai). Nobody in the shadows is called Street Sam, but plenty are called Pistons or Sticks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a street name in Shadowrun?

A street name or handle is the alias a shadowrunner uses instead of the legal name tied to their System Identification Number (SIN). Fixers, Mr. Johnsons and other runners know you only by that handle, which protects your real identity, if you still have one, from corps and law enforcement.

What are some famous Shadowrun character names?

Classic canon runners include FastJack, Dodger, Harlequin, Hatchetman, Captain Chaos, Sally Tsung, Ghost Who Walks Inside and Dirk Montgomery, plus JackPoint regulars like Netcat, Bull, Sticks, Riser, Kat o' Nine Tales, Turbo Bunny and Slamm-0!. The video games add Jake Armitage, Is0bel, Gobbet, Racter, Eiger, Glory and Blitz.

How do I pick a handle for a decker, rigger or street samurai?

Borrow from the tools of the trade. Deckers use Matrix terms (Cold Boot, Backdoor, Null Sheen), riggers use vehicle and drone terms (Wheelman, Rotodrone, Redline), street samurai use weapons and chrome (Flechette, Boneclaw, Wired Ray), and awakened characters use spells, spirits or mentor animals (Manastorm, Raven, Coyote).

Can I use these names in my own Shadowrun campaign or fiction?

The original handles and full names are free to use. Canon names such as FastJack and Harlequin belong to Shadowrun's published setting, so they are fine at your table but should not be reused for your own published characters.
