About Forsworn names
The Forsworn are the rebel natives of the Reach in Skyrim, and The Elder Scrolls Online shows the same people centuries earlier as the Reachfolk clans. Their names do not sound like the French-flavored names of High Rock or the Norse names of their Nord neighbors. The games give them a Gaelic and Brythonic cast: Madanach, Uraccen, Braig, Odvan, Cosnach, Ainethach, Kaie, Bothela. Hard ch endings, open vowels and short, blunt syllables are the mark of the Reach.
A Reach name is usually a single personal name. Standing comes from what follows it: a byname in the manner of Borkul the Beast and Nepos the Nose (Cael the Goat, Kerig the Howler), a clan (Aithbe of the Ghostsong, Lasair of Clan Ravenbone) or a title such as Briarheart, Matriarch, Shaman or Ard. Clan names are compounds of animals, spirits and the wild: Crow-Wife, Thornroot and Rageclaw come from the games, and Ashantler, Hollowstag and Moth-Mother are built the same way. Hagravens go by short, harsh names like Melka, Drascua and Petra, so the list adds Morska, Yrska and a few crone epithets.
The canon names are a small share of the list. The rest are original names on the same sounds, some of them old Irish, Welsh and Pictish names that fit the pattern.
How to choose Forsworn names
- Start with one personal name and no surname. Durach or Fiada is complete as it stands; a byname comes later, from a deed, a scar or an animal the character is likened to.
- Choose the clan before the byname. A clan such as Cragwolf or Marrowsong gives the character kin, a territory and rivals, which does more for a backstory than any epithet.
- Keep Briarheart for a champion. In the games it marks a warrior remade by hagraven ritual, so Briarheart Odran reads as a feared figure, not as a rank every fighter holds.
- Match the title to the era. Ard and Vateshran belong to the clans of The Elder Scrolls Online, while a Skyrim-era rebel is better placed by a camp, as in Aodhan of Karthspire or Cuan of Hag Rock.
- Say the ch as in loch. Names like Madanach, Sennach and Gwernach lose their Reach sound if the ending is read as a soft English ch.
Frequently asked questions
What do Forsworn names sound like?
They sound Gaelic and Brythonic, not Norse or French. Canon examples are Madanach, Uraccen, Braig, Cosnach, Kaie and Bothela, and the originals in this list follow them: Brannach, Kennoch, Noada, Laighre. Many end in ach or an and most have two or three syllables.
Do the Forsworn use surnames?
Not in the way Bretons or Imperials do. A Reach native in the games has one personal name, sometimes followed by a byname, as with Nepos the Nose, or a clan name. Madanach's Orc guard Borkul the Beast carries a byname of the same kind. The list offers both forms, such as Haldach the Red and Bearach of the Thornroot.
Which of these names come from the games?
About one in ten. Madanach, Kaie, Uraccen, Braig, Bothela, the hagravens Melka, Drascua and Petra, and clans such as Ghostsong and Crow-Wife appear in Skyrim or The Elder Scrolls Online. Names such as Brannach, Corthela, Kerig the Howler and Ravenbone are original and are not lore.
What is the difference between Forsworn and Reachfolk?
Reachfolk, or Reachmen, is the name of the people of the Reach. The Forsworn are the Reach natives who fight to take their land back in the time of Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls Online is set roughly a thousand years earlier, so its characters belong to clans such as the Ghostsong and Thornroot and are not called Forsworn.
