Generate clone names in the Star Wars tradition: short, punchy nicknames like Rex, Fives, Hardcase and Crosshair that clones earn from their squadmates, plus batch and designation-style names for original sci-fi clone stories. Ideal for Clone Wars roleplay, Legion armies, and fan fiction.
About clone names
Clones start life with a number and earn a name. In Star Wars, every clone trooper is issued a designation like CT-7567 by the Kaminoans, but the names that stick (Rex, Fives, Echo, Hardcase, Crosshair) come from brothers in the barracks. That is the key to a convincing clone name: it should sound like a nickname somebody gave a soldier, not a name a parent chose. Fives got his name from the repeated digits in CT-5555; Echo repeated orders back; Hevy carried the heavy repeater; Cutup was the squad joker; Droidbait kept getting shot.
So the pattern is short, English-sounding, one or two syllables, usually a plain word: a weapon (Blaster, Trigger), a habit (Chatterbox, Slick), a piece of gear (Scope, Wrench), a physical trait (Scar, Shorty, Ink), a specialty (Doc, Sparks, Deadeye), or a number pulled from the designation (Niner, Nines, Ninety-Nine). Commanders keep the same style (Cody, Wolffe, Bly, Bacara, Fox), which is part of what makes the clone army feel like one family. Republic Commandos and ARC troopers lean a little harder (Boss, Scorch, Sev, Fordo, Alpha).
The same logic works for any cloned character in original sci-fi: give the clone a cold factory designation, then let the people around them supply something warmer. The tension between the number and the nickname is the whole story.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick a name that could be explained in one sentence: how did this clone earn it? If you can answer that ("he never talks on comms, so, Whisper"), it will feel canon.
- Keep it to one or two syllables. Clone names get shouted over blaster fire; Crosshair and Hardcase are about as long as they go.
- Mix roles inside a squad: a medic (Kix, Patch), a heavy gunner (Hevy, Sledge), a sniper (Longshot, Deadeye), a mechanic (Wrench, Sparks) and a rookie everyone calls Shiny.
- Number-based names (Fives, Niner, Ninety-Nine) work best when the digits actually appear in the trooper's CT designation, so pick the number and the name together.
- Avoid names that sound like Jedi or Mandalorians (no Kal or Fenn); clones speak Basic and their names should feel like barracks slang, not culture.
Frequently asked questions
How do clone troopers get their names in Star Wars?
Clones are born with a designation like CT-7567, and their nicknames are given by fellow clones or, occasionally, by Jedi and trainers. The names usually reference a trait, a habit, a piece of equipment or the digits in their number, which is how CT-5555 became Fives.
What is the difference between CT and CC designations?
CT is the standard clone trooper prefix, while CC marks clone commanders trained for command from an early stage (CC-2224 Cody, CC-3636 Wolffe). ARC troopers were sometimes designated with A or ARC (ARC-77 Fordo), and Republic Commandos with RC (RC-1138 Boss).
Can I use these clone names for my own story or Star Wars Legion army?
Yes. Canonical names like Rex and Cody belong to Lucasfilm, but the naming style itself is fair game, and every original nickname here is free to use for roleplay, fan fiction, tabletop armies and Discord servers.
Do clone names work for non-Star Wars clone characters?
Absolutely. The number-plus-nickname structure is a strong template for any cloned soldier, worker or replicant: give them a sterile designation, then a warm one-word name from their comrades, and readers will instantly grasp the character's situation.
