Character names that sound like they belong on a title screen: full names for RPG heroes and shooter leads, one-word mascot names for platformers, callsigns for sci-fi operatives and culture-specific names for a realistic cast. Use them for your player character, an OC, or a game you're designing.

About video game character names

Video game character names do a job that book names don't: they get shouted by other characters, printed in a HUD, and typed into a save slot. That's why the memorable ones are short and phonetically punchy. Action and shooter protagonists tend to get one-syllable surnames with a hard stop (a Ryker, a Rook, a Voss), JRPG and fantasy leads get softer, vowel-heavy names that still read cleanly in a dialogue box, and platformer mascots get one word you can say with a grin: Bolt, Pip, Sprocket.

This list covers those registers deliberately rather than mixing them at random. You'll find full Western names for realistic casts, Japanese, Korean, Nigerian, Persian, Welsh and Scandinavian names for an ensemble that doesn't all sound like it came from one town, title-led names (Warden, Inquisitor, Agent) for NPCs and bosses, and codenames like Cipher and Nullbyte for stealth and cyberpunk settings. None of them are canon characters from existing franchises, so you can use them freely for an OC or a commercial project.

When choosing, read the name in the sentence the game will actually use: 'Kael Vantrace has joined the party' or 'You were killed by Sable Marr'. If it sounds right in that line, it will hold up for forty hours.

How to choose video game character names

  • Match the name length to how it's displayed: a nameplate over a character's head wants one or two short words, while a dialogue-heavy RPG can carry a longer name with an honorific.
  • Give the protagonist the most distinctive first letter in the cast; players confuse characters whose names start the same way, so avoid a party of Kael, Kira and Kade.
  • For a realistic setting, pull surnames from the culture the character actually comes from instead of defaulting to English ones; a squad of Okonkwo, Sørensen, Takeda and Delgado sounds like a real squad.
  • Mascot and platformer names should be nouns or sounds you can say fast (Fizz, Tumble, Gizmo); if it has more than two syllables, it's not a mascot name.
  • Save codenames and 'The' titles (The Ferryman, The Lantern Keeper) for characters whose real name is a mystery or a reveal; used everywhere, they lose their punch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these names for a character in a game I'm selling?

Yes. Every name here is original or a common real-world name, not a character from an existing franchise, so there is no copyright problem. As always, search the exact name before shipping to make sure it isn't a trademark in the games space.

What makes a good video game protagonist name?

Short, distinct from the rest of the cast, and easy to say out loud. Most famous game leads are one or two syllables per word, start with a strong consonant, and sound natural when another character shouts them. Test yours in a line of dialogue before committing.

Should my player character have a first and last name?

It depends on the genre. Realistic shooters, RPGs and narrative games usually use full names so other characters can address them formally and casually. Platformers, arcade games and stylized indies often use a single mascot-style name. Silent protagonists are frequently given a short full name that appears mostly in menus.

How do I name a whole cast so they feel consistent?

Pick one or two cultural or stylistic registers for the setting and stay in them, then vary first letters and syllable counts so each character is instantly distinguishable. A consistent naming register is what makes a world feel designed rather than assembled.
