Browse 1,000 real surnames that began as a job, each shown with its trade: Smith (metalworker), Fletcher (arrow maker), Müller (miller), Lefèvre (smith) and Kovács (smith). The list spans English, German, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Slavic, Hungarian, Turkish and Arabic trade names.

About occupational last names

An occupational surname is a family name that started as a job description. When hereditary surnames spread across medieval Europe, a village's smith, miller or tailor was often known simply by the trade, and the label passed to the children. That is why the same few trades turn up in language after language: Smith in English, Schmidt in German, Lefèvre in French, Ferrari in Italian, Kovács in Hungarian and Haddad in Arabic all point to the forge.

This list holds 1,000 such surnames, and every entry carries a short trade tag in parentheses, as in Fletcher (arrow maker), Wainwright (wagon builder) or Schneider (tailor). About a fifth are English. The rest come from German, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Slavic, Hungarian, Romanian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and other naming traditions, each in its usual spelling or romanization, diacritics included. Forms that name a tradesman's child, such as Smithson, Kuznetsov or McGowan, are tagged with the parent's trade.

Titles and nicknames that were never jobs, such as King, Bishop or Pope, are left out. The tags are trade labels to help you choose a name for a character, a setting or a project. They say nothing about any real family's history.

How to choose occupational last names

  • Let the trade do character work: a quartermaster called Spencer (pantry steward) or a ranger called Woodward (forest warden) tells the reader something before the first line of dialogue.
  • Keep one language per family or region. Müller, Becker and Zimmermann sit well together, while Müller beside Herrero and Kowalski reads as a port city, which is fine if that is the setting you want.
  • Copy the surname without the tag for the final name. The parentheses are there to help you choose and are not part of the name.
  • Mix a few rarer crafts such as Arkwright, Lorimer or Challoner in with Smith and Baker so a cast list does not read like a phone book.
  • If you plan to use a surname for a business or a published work, check for yourself whether someone already uses it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an occupational last name?

It is a surname that began as the name of a job or an office and later became hereditary. Smith (metalworker), Cooper (barrel maker), Müller (miller) and Kovács (smith) are typical examples from this list.

Does this generator turn my own career into a last name?

No. It is a fixed list of 1,000 historical trade surnames to pick from, not a tool that converts a modern job into a name. Most of the trades are older crafts and offices, such as Chandler (candle maker), Reeve (manor overseer) or Schreiber (scribe), so browse the list and choose the one that fits.

Why do so many of the surnames point to a smith or a miller?

Every village needed those trades, so each language produced its own surname for them. The list includes forms such as Schmidt, Lefèvre, Ferrari, Herrero and Kowalski for the smith, and Müller, Meunier, Molinari and Molnár for the miller.

Are these surnames real?

Yes. They are surnames in real use, written in their usual spelling or romanization, diacritics included, such as Lefèvre, Kovács and Değirmenci. The list was de-duplicated, and it makes no claim about the ancestry of any family that carries one of these names.
