Ain is a natural spring, bir a dug well, ghadir a pool that stands after rain, birkat a tank or basin, and wahat the oasis itself. Umm means 'mother of' and introduces whatever grows or lives there, as in Umm al-Nakhil, mother of the palms.

Yes. Short well names work for travel waypoints and random encounter sites, named gardens and pools suit settlements, and the long evocative titles (Oasis of the Weeping Stone, Oasis of Patient Kings) make good quest destinations. The Tuareg, Persian and Spanish style names are useful when you want a desert region to feel different from a standard Arabian-style setting.

Most are invented. A few are modelled on or reference real places such as Siwa, Huacachina, Turfan or the historic wells of the Arabian pilgrim roads, included because they show how real oases are named. Check before using any name for a commercial project set in the real world.

Specificity. Real oases are named for one concrete thing: a kind of tree, a quality of the water, an animal that drinks there, a person who dug the well. A name like Tamarisk Well or Bir Barida feels lived in; a name like Mystic Sands Oasis does not. Keep most names plain and let one or two be grand.
