About desert kingdom names

Real desert kingdoms were named for water, trade and the dynasty that held the wells. Sheba, Nabatea, Himyar, Kush, Garamantia and the Songhai cities of the Sahel all sat on caravan routes, and their names travelled with the salt, gold and frankincense they taxed. A kingdom could be known by its capital (Ma'rib, Petra, Meroë), by its ruling house (Kinda, Ghassan, Lakhm), or by a Greek or Latin exonym that outlived the people themselves. That is why a desert realm sounds right when it pairs a short, hard place name with a title that tells you who rules it.

The title matters as much as the name. Sultanates and emirates lean Arabic and mercantile, satrapies and shahdoms lean Persian and imperial, khanates suggest the steppe-desert belt of Central Asia, and sheikhdoms are small tribal coastlines. Berber and Tuareg names (Ahaggar, Azawagh, Tinariwen) carry a different vowel music again, and Egyptian-flavoured names use hard k, t and sh sounds with divine elements like Amun or Ra.

This generator mixes all of these: invented names with authentic phonology, historical realms you can borrow outright, Al- and Bani- dynastic forms, and descriptive English titles built from dunes, salt, wells and mirage. Pick one that fits the scale of the realm, then let the capital, coinage and ruler's title follow from it.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the scale before the name: a sheikhdom is a few wells and a coastline, a sultanate is a trading power, and an empire or caliphate spans many oases. The title tells readers the size instantly.
  • Keep the core name short and hard-edged (Qalathar, Ubar, Tadmor) and let the title carry the length; 'Sultanate of Qahir' reads better than a six-syllable root with no title.
  • Match the phonology to the culture you are drawing on: Arabic names like Al-, Bani- and -iyah endings; Persian names with -abad, -stan and -kert; Tuareg and Berber names with Ta-, Tin- and Kel- prefixes.
  • Descriptive titles (Kingdom of the Last Well, the Salt Throne) work best as epithets beside a proper name, not as the only name on the map.
  • Name the kingdom after its water or its trade good and the geography writes itself: the Frankincense Kingdom, the Salt Kingdom of Bilma, the Thousand Wells.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sultanate, an emirate and a caliphate?

An emirate is ruled by an emir, a prince or commander, and is usually small. A sultanate is ruled by a sultan holding sovereign secular power, often over a large trading state. A caliphate claims religious and political leadership over the whole Muslim community, so in fiction it implies the largest and most prestigious realm of the three.

Are these desert kingdom names based on real places?

Some are. Realms like Sheba, Nabatea, Himyar, Kush, Garamantia and Dilmun were real ancient kingdoms, and names like Sijilmassa, Chinguetti and Ubar are historic caravan cities or lost cities you can borrow. The rest are invented using the same Arabic, Persian, Berber and Egyptian sound patterns.

Can I use these names for a D&D campaign or published novel?

Yes. Place names and the invented names here are free to use in commercial work. If you borrow a historical kingdom name, treat it as you would any real-world reference and avoid implying your fictional version represents the real culture.

How do I name the cities inside my desert kingdom?

Use the same language family as the kingdom: Arabic oasis cities often begin with Ain (spring), Bir (well), Wadi (valley), Qasr (fortress) or Ras (headland); Persian cities end in -abad or -kert; Tuareg and Berber towns start with Ta- or Tin-. Our desert city and desert town generators cover these patterns.
