Noir City Name Generator

A noir city is never just a backdrop; it is the story's weather, its moral climate and usually its villain. Classic examples in fiction are invented stand-ins for real American cities, with names that sound like they could appear on a 1940s road map but carry a shadow: a harbor, a mill, a fog bank or a grave hidden inside the word. The best ones pair a plain, plausible place word (Port, Falls, Heights, Junction, Landing) with something cold or corroded: Port Vesper, Ashfall, Graymouth, Gallow's Reach, Coalport.

Sound matters more than meaning. Hard consonants and dark vowels (Carrow, Dunmore, Blackgate, Grimsworth) read as tough; soft, bright names read as suburbs. Surname-style cities (Hartwell, Halloway, Sinclair City) suggest founding families and old money gone rotten, while industrial names (Furnace Row, Slag Harbor, Tannery Hill) suggest the slums where the detective actually works.
