Gangster Name Generator

A gangster name is almost never the name on the birth certificate. It is a nickname earned on the street, and the best ones come from a specific place: a physical trait (Baby Face Nelson, Legs Diamond, Jimmy Blue Eyes), a weapon or habit (Machine Gun Kelly, Tommy Cigars), a job on the crew (Wheelman Wally, Bagman Benny), or a story nobody tells the cops (Vinnie Two Times, Gaspipe, Kid Twist). The 1920s and 30s press fixed the classic format of first name, nickname in quotes, surname, and the FBI still uses it in indictments today.

The modern street version works differently. Hood names are short and said fast: a size or age marker (Lil, Big, Baby, Young) plus a one-syllable hook (Lil Smoke, Big Worm, Young Dolla), or a clipped childhood name like Meech, Twan, Tay Tay and Reese. Cholo and cartel nicknames lean on Spanish descriptors and a touch of irony, so a feared enforcer is Sleepy, Droopy, Smiley or Flaco. British firms preferred plain surnames and a single epithet, as in Mad Frankie Fraser.
