Mixes classic noir canon with hundreds of original names for scripts, novels and RPGs.
About film noir names
Film noir names come from the novels and screenplays of the 1940s and early 1950s, and they follow rules you can hear. Heroes get clipped first names and blunt Anglo or Irish surnames: Sam Spade, Jeff Bailey, Walter Neff, Mike Hammer. Women get names that sound glamorous or slightly foreign: Gilda, Vivian, Kathie, Phyllis, Veda, Velma, Elsa Bannister, Kitty Collins. Heavies carry Italian, Jewish, Irish or German surnames with a street nickname in front, from Moose Malloy to Johnny Rocco, and the police are Lieutenants and Sergeants named Polhaus, Hennessey or Kowalczyk. Even the walk-ons are typed by job, which is why a noir cast list reads like a census of the city: the hatcheck girl, the stoolie, the mouthpiece, the wheelman, the torch singer.
This list gives you a little canon to calibrate against, then hundreds of original names in the same registers: detectives and shamuses, femme fatales and molls, gun-nicknamed hoods like Three-Finger Frankie Russo and Ice Pick Willie Moran, ethnic neighborhood names from Little Italy to the Polish and Jewish blocks, society and studio people, and the archetype roles themselves for when a script just needs Cigarette Girl or Bagman. Pair them so the sound tells the audience who is who before anyone speaks.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the archetype. One-syllable first name plus hard surname for the detective (Sam Rourke, Vic Halloran), a lush or unusual first name for the femme fatale (Gilda Moreno, Veronica Kane), and nickname plus surname for the heavy (Fat Tony Marchese).
- Use period first names. Walter, Harry, Lou, Frank, Eddie, Vince and Mickey for men; Phyllis, Vera, Rita, Dolores, Gloria, Kitty and Lana for women. Modern names like Tyler or Madison break the spell instantly.
- Let surnames map the city. Italian, Irish, Jewish, Polish and German names put characters in specific neighborhoods and trades; old-money Anglo names like Whitlock and Pemberton mark the uptown clients whose money starts the trouble.
- Give heavies nicknames that describe a weapon, a body part or a hometown: Ice Pick Willie, One-Eye Mickey, Brooklyn Benny. Avoid ironic or modern nicknames.
- For bit parts, the role can be the name. Screenplays of the era credited the Hatcheck Girl, the Stoolie and the Bartender by function, so a short archetype line with a plain name (Cabbie Joe Pulaski) reads authentically.
Frequently asked questions
What are typical film noir character names?
Classic examples include Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Walter Neff, Phyllis Dietrichson, Gilda Mundson, Jeff Bailey, Kathie Moffat, Mildred Pierce, Harry Lime, Norma Desmond and Brigid O'Shaughnessy. The pattern is a short, hard name for the hero, a glamorous or exotic name for the woman at the center of the plot, and a nicknamed ethnic surname for the gangster.
What makes a good femme fatale name?
A first name with a little music in it, often two or three syllables and slightly foreign or old-fashioned (Gilda, Vivian, Dolores, Veronica, Elsa, Kathie, Lola), paired with a surname that sounds either expensive or borrowed. Many noir women also use stage names or married names that hide who they really are, which you can suggest with a mismatch like Lana Dubois or Kitty Delmar.
Can I use these names for a noir RPG or murder mystery party?
Yes. The list is built for casts: detectives, cops, DAs and judges, heavies and their bosses, singers and showgirls, society clients, and archetype roles like Bagman and Hatcheck Girl that work as ready-made NPCs for Call of Cthulhu 1940s scenarios, Blades-style heists or a dinner-party whodunit.
Are these names from real films?
A small portion are canon characters from films like The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Out of the Past, Gilda, The Third Man, Sunset Boulevard, The Killing and L.A. Confidential, included so you can hear the style. The large majority are original names written in the same register and free to use in your own work.
