Generate French mountain names with an English gloss: real peaks marked as real, such as Aiguille du Midi and Puy Mary, and invented ones built on the regional shape words, such as Aiguille des Brumes (needle of the mists), Ballon des Trois Sapins, Crêt des Sonnailles, Tuc de l'Isard and Punta di u Ventu.

About French mountain names

French maps name a mountain by its shape first. Mont is the general word, a pic is a pointed summit, an aiguille (needle) a rock spire, a dent (tooth) a jagged fang, and a tête (head), roc or rocher a blunter top or crag. Several words belong to one region: puy to the Massif Central, ballon to the rounded summits of the Vosges, crêt mostly to the Jura, tuc, soum and pène to the Pyrenees, and monte, punta and capu to Corsica, where the names are Corsican.

The 1,000 names here keep each word in its region. About three in ten are real peaks, each marked real with its range or region, from Mont Blanc and Barre des Écrins to Puy Mary, Grand Ballon and Monte Cinto. The rest are invented on the same patterns and carry a literal English gloss: Aiguille des Brumes (needle of the mists), Crêt des Sonnailles, Tuc de l'Isard. Saints and legends (Dent de Gargantua, Pic du Dahu), fantasy peaks (Mont du Trône Vide) and names with no shape word (Le Lion Couché) round out the list.

An invented name is no promise that no such peak exists: a shape word paired with an animal or a color may match a small real summit, so search any name before you publish it.

How to choose French mountain names

  • Match the shape word to the mountain. Use aiguille or dent for a rock spire, dôme or ballon for a rounded snow or grass summit, and tête, roc or signal for a lower top with a view.
  • Keep regional words at home. A puy belongs in a volcanic Massif Central setting, a ballon in the Vosges, a crêt in the Jura, a tuc or soum in the Pyrenees and a punta or capu in Corsica.
  • Get the small words right when you adapt a name: du before a masculine noun (Pic du Lynx), de la before a feminine one (Roc de la Chèvre), de l' before a vowel (Tête de l'Orage) and des for plurals (Tête des Vents).
  • Build a massif from one family. Give the main summit a Grand or Grande name and its neighbors a Petit or Petite one, a compass point or a time of day, as in Grande Dent du Nord and Petite Dent du Levant.
  • Search a name before you publish it. Entries marked real are actual peaks, and an unmarked name can still match a minor summit somewhere in France.

Frequently asked questions

What do aiguille, dent, puy and ballon mean?

They are shape words. Aiguille means needle and dent means tooth, both used for rock spires in the Alps; a puy is a hill or volcanic cone of the Massif Central, and a ballon is a rounded summit of the Vosges. The list glosses them in each name, as in Aiguille de Givre (needle of frost) and Puy des Cendres (puy of the ashes).

Are these real French mountains?

About three in ten are, and each of those is marked real with its range or region, for example Mont Ventoux, La Meije, Vignemale and Puy de Sancy. The others, such as Mont des Quatre Vents or Roc de l'Écho, were invented on the same patterns. An invented name may still coincide with a real minor peak, so search it before you treat it as a made-up place.

Why are the Corsican names not in French?

Corsican peaks have Corsican names, though French maps often print them in an older Italian-style spelling: Monte Cinto and Monte Rotondo are Monte Cintu and Monte Ritondu in Corsican. Corsican has monte, punta, capu and cima where French has mont, pointe, tête and cime, and di u, di a, and di i or di e for the French du, de la and des. The invented Corsican entries follow that grammar and are labeled, as in Punta di u Ventu (Corsican: point of the wind).

How accurate are the glosses?

They are literal translations of the words as they read today, not histories of the names. Real names whose meaning is unclear, such as La Meije or Vignemale, get a region and no gloss. Regional words with no neat English match, such as puy, ballon, suc and tuc, are left as they are.
