About Mithra names

The Mithra are the cat-like hunters of Final Fantasy XI, at home in Windurst and in Kazham on the jungle island of Elshimo. Nearly every Mithra an adventurer meets is a woman, since their men are few and seldom leave the homeland, so the names here are women's names. The model is the game's own cast: Nanaa Mihgo, Semih Lafihna, Perih Vashai and Jakoh Wahcondalo. A given name is short, three syllables at most, usually with a breathy h closing a syllable or a doubled vowel. A family name follows it and runs longer, from two syllables up to four.

Player characters in Final Fantasy XI carry one name only; the two-part form is a habit of the game's characters. So the list holds three kinds of entry: single given names such as Tahla, Sumaa and Merihko for your own character, full names such as Luumi Pesuhgo for stories and role-play, and a small set of family names on their own. Some family names turn up three times with different given names, which gives you sisters or a mother and daughter.

How to choose Mithra names

  • For a player character, take one of the single names. The game gives you one word, so a given name such as Tahla, Sufih or Kirii is the form that fits; keep the family names for your backstory.
  • If a name is taken on your world, change one vowel or move the h before you add anything. Tahla can become Tehla or Talah and still read as Mithra, which a tacked-on extra letter does not.
  • Say the h as breath, not as a hard sound. Names read as Mithra when a vowel is followed by h or is doubled, as in Semoh, Mehtu and Lohaa.
  • Leave the Final Fantasy XIV habits out. A Mithra name has no apostrophe, no tribe letter in front and no Tia or Nunh behind it; those belong to the Miqo'te.
  • Give kin one family name. Tiika Kasihwa, Lhemo Kasihwa and Shali Kasihwa are in the list for exactly that, and a long family name such as Rihgamoleh suits a chieftainess or an elder.

Frequently asked questions

How are Mithra names built?

A Mithra given name is short and soft: one to three syllables, usually with an h after a vowel (Mehtu, Sufih) or a doubled vowel (Sumaa, Kirii). Characters in the game add a family name of two to four syllables in the same sound, as Nanaa Mihgo and Jakoh Wahcondalo do. The list follows both halves of that pattern with names of its own.

Do Mithra have last names?

The game's own Mithra do, for example Perih Vashai and Semih Lafihna. Your character does not: an adventurer in Final Fantasy XI has a single name, so the two-part entries here, such as Dhelu Ehmpatori or Luumi Pesuhgo, are for fan fiction, role-play and character sheets.

Are Mithra names the same as Miqo'te names?

No. The Miqo'te of Final Fantasy XIV look alike but are named by other rules: a tribe letter and an apostrophe for Seekers of the Sun, and Tia or Nunh after a man's name. Mithra names use none of that. If you are naming a Final Fantasy XIV character, use the FFXIV Miqo'te Name Generator instead.
