About Viera names
Viera are the tall, long-eared people of Ivalice, introduced in Final Fantasy XII with Fran and her sisters Mjrn and Jote and made playable in Final Fantasy XIV's Shadowbringers. Their names carry a distinctive look: Rava Viera of the Golmore Jungle traditionally use short, consonant-dense names with almost no vowels, so Mjrn, Ktjn, Nrym and Vhaan look strange on the page but roll off the tongue as one or two syllables. That sparse spelling is the single most recognizable Viera trait, and it is what makes a name read as 'from the wood' rather than generic elf.
FFXIV divides Viera into two clans. The dark-skinned Rava keep the FFXII tradition, while the fair-skinned Veena of the Skatay Range use softer, more melodic names with full vowels, closer to old Ivalician or Dalmascan sounds. How to choose Viera names
- For a Rava, drop most vowels: start from a normal name (Karen, Sarah) and compress it (Krn, Srh) until it looks like Fran's sisters, then check it still has one clear pronunciation.
- For a Veena, keep full vowels and soft endings (Cerine, Ysolde, Solenne) and pair with a mountain or old-Ivalician surname to signal the Skatay Range.
- Decide whether your Viera left the wood; wood-born characters can go surname-free in FFXIV by using a short 'Ja' or village tag, wanderers should carry a Dalmascan or Bozjan family name.
- FFXIV requires a first and last name of 2 to 15 characters each, so a two-letter surname like 'Ja' works but a single letter does not.
- Male Viera names can be slightly longer (Erenville, Kaethen). The wood's naming is not gendered, but the male exiles who appear in lore tend toward more vowels.
