Generate Final Fantasy XI character names in the pattern of each of Vana'diel's five races: Hume names like Gerwin and Frieda, Elvaan names like Esmerault and Clarimonde, Tarutaru names like Tuki-Muki and Mapopo, Mithra names like Ahna Rhemolo, and Galka names like Dorgrak or Stone Breaker.

About FFXI names

Final Fantasy XI gives each of Vana'diel's five playable races its own way of naming, and the game's characters follow it closely enough that a name tells you where someone is from. Humes, centered on Bastok, carry plain single names of Western cut such as Volker, Naji and Cornelia, with Far Eastern names like Ayame and Tenzen for characters whose roots lie in the East. The Elvaan of San d'Oria have an Old French ring: Trion, Curilla, Excenmille, Rainemard.

Windurst is the most rule-bound. Tarutaru men take a two-part name joined by a hyphen whose halves rhyme or echo, like Ajido-Marujido and Koru-Moru. Tarutaru women take one word that doubles its last syllable: Shantotto, Kupipi, Apururu. Mithra use a short given name and a family name, both heavy with the letter h: Nanaa Mihgo, Perih Vashai. Galka have guttural names of their own (Raogrimm, Gumbah), and Humes who find those hard to say hand out nicknames such as Iron Eater.

This list holds all five patterns, mostly original names built on them, with a smaller share of names from the game for reference. Because the character creator takes a single word of letters only, 3 to 15 characters, there is also a set of one-word forms: closed-up Tarutaru pairs, Mithra given names and Galka nicknames run together.

How to choose FFXI names

  • Pick the race first and stay inside its pattern. A Tarutaru called Esmerault or an Elvaan called Tuki-Muki reads as a joke to anyone who knows Vana'diel, which is fine only if the joke is the point.
  • The name field takes one word of letters, 3 to 15 characters. Close up a hyphenated Tarutaru name (Bopa-Lopa becomes Bopalopa) and use only the given name of a Mithra, or pick from the one-word forms such as Tokomoko, Khomari and Stonejaw.
  • To build your own Tarutaru name, start with two short syllables and echo them: change the first consonant for a man (Kipo-Ripo, Tamu-Ramu) or repeat the last syllable for a woman (Rumimi, Pakoko).
  • For a Galka, decide whether the character goes by a Galkan name like Korzugg or by a nickname Humes gave him, like Heavy Anvil or Quiet Mountain. The nickname says something about how he is seen in Bastok.
  • Names are claimed world by world, so go to character creation with a second and a third choice ready.

Frequently asked questions

How do Tarutaru names work in FFXI?

Men have two parts joined by a hyphen that rhyme or echo each other, as in Koru-Moru, Yoran-Oran or the original Sanpa-Ranpa. Women have a single word whose last syllable is doubled, as in Kupipi, Chumimi or the original Tilulu and Nokiki. Both halves of the list follow those two rules throughout.

What do Elvaan and Hume names sound like?

Elvaan names have an Old French sound and are usually one long word: Rochefogne and Louverance in the game, Hauteclair, Percevant and Florimonde in this list. Hume names are short and plain, often Germanic in Bastok (Lothar, Gunther, Dagmar) and Japanese in style for characters from the Far East (Kojiro, Tsubaki).

Can I type these names straight into the character creator?

The one-word names can go in as they are. Names with a hyphen or a space, such as Hoji-Kanoji, Kheri Dahlmazo or Patient Hammer, need closing up or shortening, because the game takes a single word of letters between 3 and 15 characters. Whether another player already has a name on your world is something only the game can tell you.

Are these names taken from the game?

A minority are, and they are there so the patterns are easy to see: Shantotto, Ajido-Marujido, Nanaa Mihgo, Zeid and others, about sixty in all. The rest are original fan-made names built on the same patterns, such as Mapopo, Thuna Bhakmoh and Dorgrak. Final Fantasy XI and its characters belong to Square Enix.
