Generate a villain and a power in one line: 1,000 original pairings such as Doctor Lacuna, who erases the last minute from any memory, Lady Tinder, who lights a candle or fuse within a mile, and Magnetar, who pulls all steel objects toward a single point.

About this generator

A villain's name and a villain's power do different jobs. The name sets the tone: a Doctor or a Baron promises a planner, a single hard word like Magnetar promises brute force, and a nickname such as Loose Change Lenny promises a nuisance. The power sets the stakes, because it tells the hero what can go wrong. When the two arrive together you can start writing at once, so every entry here is one line: the name, a hyphen, the power.

The list runs through fourteen kinds of power: fire and heat, cold and weather, electricity and machines, the mind, light and shadow, time and luck, space and gravity, stone, plants and animals, water and chemistry, sound, the body, hauntings and curses, and the petty everyday powers of comedy villains. Inside each kind the names change shape, from titled masterminds and epithets to one-word codenames and alliterative street names.

Most powers are narrow on purpose. Doctor Lacuna erases one minute, not a lifetime, and the Snooze Button rewinds nine minutes once a day. A power with a limit gives the hero a way to win and gives you a plot. None of the characters is meant to be a villain from an existing comic, film or anime.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Read the power before the name. If the limit in it (once a day, only in half light, one person at a time) suggests a scene, you have found your villain.
  • Swap freely. A name from one line and a power from another often gives a stranger, better character than either original pairing.
  • Match the scale to the story. A street-level tale wants Pothole Pat or Wrong Number; a world-ending arc wants a power that reaches across a city.
  • Give the power a cost the entry does not mention, such as fatigue, a tell or a rule the villain cannot break, so that fights are decided by cleverness.
  • Before you publish a story or a game, search the name yourself. Short codenames are popular, and another writer may already use the one you like.

Frequently asked questions

How is each entry laid out?

Every entry is a villain's name, a spaced hyphen and one short power, for example "The Snooze Button - rewinds nine minutes, once a day". The power is written as what the villain does, so you can read the line aloud as a sentence. Copy the whole line or only the half you need.

Are these villains from Marvel, DC or anime?

No. The names and the powers were written for this page in the general style of comic-book villains, and none is meant to be a character from a published series. Short codenames are common in superhero fiction, though, so a name can coincide with one that exists somewhere. Search any name you plan to publish.

What kinds of powers are in the list?

Fourteen families, from classic elements to comedy. You will find fire (Kilnmother bakes soft clay into marching soldiers), the mind (The Afterthought is forgotten the moment eyes look away), luck (Lady Longshot makes the unlikeliest outcome happen) and small annoyances (Wet Sock Wendell soaks a single foot of each enemy).

Can I use these villains in my own story or campaign?

Yes. Use them as written, rename them or keep only the power for a character of your own. They work as tabletop antagonists, writing prompts, one-shot bosses and rivals for a hero you have already built.
