Generate My Hero Academia names in the style of the series: pun-filled Japanese civilian names like Izuku Midoriya, punchy hero aliases like Red Riot, and menacing villain handles like Overhaul. Canon characters and original names side by side.

About mha names

Names in My Hero Academia work on two levels. Every character has an ordinary Japanese civilian name that secretly describes their Quirk, and most also pick a hero or villain alias that becomes their public brand. Kohei Horikoshi loads the civilian names with puns: Bakugo Katsuki uses the kanji for explode and win, Todoroki means roaring and pairs with Shoto (burning and freezing), Uraraka Ochaco is written with the character for floating, and Iida Tenya hides the word for idling engine. Even the teachers follow the rule, with Aizawa (Eraserhead) reading as clear-cut swamp.

Hero names are shorter and louder. Class 1-A's picks show the main patterns: a Quirk pun (Chargebolt, Cellophane, Earphone Jack), a personal motto (Deku, Red Riot, Dynamight), a single word or single name (Shoto, Hawks, Mirko), or a job-title style label (Best Jeanist, Recovery Girl, Power Loader). Villains go darker and more abstract, often a single unsettling noun such as Overhaul, Stain, Twice, Dabi or Muscular. Ranked pros sometimes carry a descriptor as well, like the Flame Hero Endeavor or the Rabbit Hero Mirko.

The list mixes canon characters, real hero and villain aliases, and original names built with the same tricks, so you can pull a whole roster of classmates, rivals and pros for fan fiction, roleplay or a Quirk-based tabletop game.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide the Quirk first, then name the person: MHA civilian names hide the power in their kanji, so a wind user might be Sorano or Kazeharu and a lightning user Kaminaga or Raiden.
  • Keep hero aliases to one to three syllables so they can be shouted mid-fight; Red Riot, Froppy and Hawks all pass this test.
  • Use a descriptor prefix for pro heroes and a bare noun for villains: the Turbo Hero Ingenium sounds like a licensed pro, while Overhaul sounds like a threat.
  • For English-flavored aliases, misspell or blend words the way Horikoshi does (Creati, Uravity, Tentacole) rather than using a plain dictionary word.
  • Check that the alias is not already a canon character if you plan to post fan work; readers will notice a second Deku.

Frequently asked questions

How do My Hero Academia character names work?

Most civilian names are kanji puns on the character's Quirk or personality: Midoriya Izuku contains green and valley, Bakugo means explosive, and Todoroki Shoto combines burning and freezing. Hero aliases are separate and chosen by the character, usually as a Quirk pun or a personal statement.

Are Deku, Red Riot and Uravity real hero names?

Yes. Class 1-A picked their hero names in the Hero Name episode: Deku (Midoriya), Red Riot (Kirishima), Uravity (Uraraka), Ingenium (Iida), Froppy (Asui), Chargebolt (Kaminari), Creati (Yaoyorozu) and so on. Bakugo later settled on Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight, usually shortened to Dynamight.

What makes a good MHA villain name?

Villains tend toward single, blunt nouns that describe what they do to victims or society: Overhaul, Stain, Decay-linked Shigaraki, Twice, Muscular, Moonfish. Avoid heroic adjectives and keep it cold and specific.

Can I use these names for fan fiction or a D&D-style Quirk campaign?

Absolutely. The canon names belong to their characters, but the original names and the naming patterns are free to use for OCs, roleplay and non-commercial fan work.
