Generate My Hero Academia hero names built the way U.A. students build them: a quirk pun, a wordplay mashup, or a title like Red Riot, Uravity, Chargebolt, or Lemillion. Includes canon Pro Hero names for reference plus original ones for your OC, 1,000 names in all.

About MHA hero names

In My Hero Academia, a hero name is a brand. Students at U.A. pick theirs during the Hero Name assignment with Midnight, and the best ones follow the same logic: describe the quirk with a pun or a portmanteau in English (Uravity for gravity plus Uraraka, Chargebolt for electricity, Creati for creation), or use a single confident word that works on a billboard (Endeavor, Hawks, Mirko). Almost every canon name is short, easy to chant from a crowd, and instantly tells the public what the hero does.

The pattern to notice is that Japanese characters take English-language hero names, because in-universe those sound flashy and modern. Puns on the character's real name are common too, such as Froppy for Tsuyu Asui, Tentacole for Shoji, and Red Riot honoring Crimson Riot. Names that are pure power words (Fire Storm, Shadow Walker) feel like generic Western superheroes rather than MHA, so this list leans on the wordplay approach instead. Food, rescue and Japanese-word names feature too.

When naming your OC, decide the quirk first, then look for a word that describes its effect, its side effect, or the object it resembles. A gravity quirk can become Gravitas, a sound quirk can become Decibel, and a copy quirk can become Xerox. Two-word names should still be tight enough to fit on a costume.

How to choose MHA hero names

  • Start from the quirk, not from adjectives: list what the power does, what it looks like, and its drawback, then hunt for a word or pun that captures one of those.
  • Try a portmanteau of the character's real name and their quirk, the way Uravity fuses Uraraka and gravity or Creati fuses Yaoyorozu's Creation.
  • Keep it to one to three syllables if possible; Deku, Hawks, and Mirko are chantable, while long titles are hard to shout in a stadium.
  • Test the name against a rank: 'The No. 3 Hero, Fahrenheit' should sound natural in Present Mic's announcer voice.
  • Avoid names already taken by canon Pro Heroes if your OC lives in the same universe; hero names are registered and unique in-world.

Frequently asked questions

How do MHA hero names usually work?

Most are English puns or portmanteaus that describe the quirk (Chargebolt, Uravity, Cellophane), a reference to a mentor (Red Riot after Crimson Riot), or a single striking word (Endeavor, Hawks). They are chosen by the student and registered publicly.

Why are the hero names in English when the characters are Japanese?

In-universe, English-sounding names read as slick and marketable, the same way Japanese brands use English slogans. That is why even a Tokyo native like Iida goes by Ingenium rather than a Japanese title.

Can my OC's hero name just be their real name?

Yes, several canon characters do this: Shoto Todoroki uses Shoto, and Izuku turned his childhood insult Deku into his hero name. It works best when the name carries personal meaning.

Are these names free to use for fan fiction and OCs?

Yes, the original names here are offered for fan fiction and OCs. Canon names such as Deku or Lemillion belong to the series and are included only for reference and inspiration.
