About Luxembourgish last names
Most Luxembourg surnames grew out of the German dialects of the Moselle region, and generations of French-language record keeping gave them a look of their own: Schmit with a single t, Muller and Schroeder without an umlaut, Kieffer with a double f. Schmit is the smith, Muller the miller, Kieffer the cooper, Wagener the cartwright and Kremer the shopkeeper, while Faber, Molitor and Sutor are the smith, the miller and the shoemaker put into Latin.
A second large group points to a village or a farm: Erpelding, Dondelinger, Medinger, Useldinger, Weimerskirch, Bettendorf. A third comes from a father's first name, with an -s (Peters, Nickels, Michels), an -en (Hansen, Heinen, Thielen) or the -y of a Latin genitive (Jacoby, Pauly, Huberty, Petry). Many of these names are shared with the German region around Trier and with Lorraine.
The list also carries, as a minority, names that arrived later: French and Walloon names such as Lambert, Thiry and Collignon, the Italian names of families who came to the steel towns of the south, such as Rossi and Ferrari, and the Portuguese names of today's largest immigrant community, such as Rodrigues and Ferreira. A small share are hyphenated double names like Schmit-Kayser, the customary form in which a married person joins a spouse's surname to their own.
How to choose Luxembourgish last names
- Keep the Luxembourg spellings. Schmit, Muller, Schroeder, Koenig and Jaeger belong to the Grand Duchy, while Schmitt, Müller and Schröder move a character across the border into Germany.
- Match the surname to the family's story. Thill, Krier or Flammang suit a long-established family, Rossi or Ferrari a family from the steel towns of Esch or Dudelange, and Rodrigues or Ferreira a present-day family anywhere in the country.
- Pair the surname with a French first name for the official form and a Luxembourgish short form for daily life: Jean Weimerskirch on paper, Jang at home.
- Use a double name such as Faber-Molitor or Kremer-Olinger for an older or more formal character. It reads as a married couple's two surnames joined by a hyphen.
- For family research, try the spelling variants. The same name can appear in old records as Kayser and Keiser, or as Biver, Biever and Biwer, and all of those forms are in the list.
Frequently asked questions
What are the most common last names in Luxembourg?
Trade names set the tone: Schmit and Schmitz (the smith), Muller (the miller), Weber (the weaver), Wagner (the cartwright), Becker (the baker), Kieffer (the cooper) and Kremer (the shopkeeper) are generally counted among the most common, together with Hoffmann, Thill, Schroeder, Reuter and Klein. Thill goes back to a short form of an old first name and Klein to a nickname for a small person. All thirteen are in this list.
Why is Schmit spelled with one t and Muller without an umlaut?
The surnames are German in origin, but French has long been the main written language of the civil register. Names settled into forms without umlauts, so the country writes Muller, Schroeder, Koenig and Jaeger where Germany writes Müller, Schröder, König and Jäger. Schmit with a single t is the usual Luxembourg form of the smith's name.
Why are there Italian and Portuguese names in a Luxembourgish list?
Because they are surnames of people who live in Luxembourg. Italian families settled in the steel towns of the south from the late nineteenth century, and the Portuguese are the largest immigrant community today. Names such as Rossi, Ferrari, Rodrigues and Ferreira make up a minority of the list beside the older stock, and they are easy to tell apart from names like Steichen or Hoscheit.
Are these the surnames of real families?
The list was drafted from surnames borne in Luxembourg and the neighboring Moselle region, then de-duplicated and screened. It has not been compared with a population register, so treat it as a source of ideas for characters and research leads, not as a record of who lives where. A surname alone does not point to any particular person.
