Generate Belgian last names in their Belgian spelling: Flemish names like Peeters, Janssens, De Smet and Vandenberghe, Walloon names like Dubois, Lejeune and Delvaux, and East Belgian names like Schmitz and Heinen. One surname per entry, with De and Van capitalized the way Belgium writes them.

About Belgian last names

Belgian surnames come from three language communities, and the spelling often tells you the country before the name does. In Flanders the patronymics are Peeters, Janssens, Claessens, Maes and Mertens, where the Netherlands writes Peters, Jansen and Klaassen. The particles take a capital and are often fused to the name: De Smet or Desmet (the smith), Van den Berghe or Vandenberghe (from the hill), and Verbeke, where Ver is a worn-down van der. Belgium files these names under D and V.

Old spellings are the other mark. Family names were fixed in the civil registry before Dutch spelling was standardized, so Belgian names keep ae for a long a (Baert, Claes), ck and ckx (Merckx, Hendrickx), uy and ey (Cuypers, Claeys) and gh (Verhaeghe).

About a fifth of the list is Walloon and Picard: Dubois, Lejeune (the young), Delvaux (of the valley), Leclercq, and Liège names in Xh such as Xhonneux, where xh stands for an h sound of Walloon. A smaller share comes from the German-speaking east around Eupen and Sankt Vith, with Schmitz, Heinen and Radermacher. A surname does not tell you which language its bearer speaks: Brussels and the towns along the language border have mixed these stocks for centuries.

How to choose Belgian last names

  • Write the particle with a capital in every position: Lotte De Smet, Jan Van Damme, Mr. Vandenberghe. Lower-case de and van after a first name is the habit of the Netherlands, not of Belgium.
  • Sort by the particle in an index or a cast list: De Backer goes under D, and Van Acker and Vanneste both go under V.
  • Treat the spaced and the closed-up form as two different family names. De Clercq, Declercq and De Clerck are separate entries here, so pick one and keep it for the whole family.
  • For a full name, pair a Dutch given name with a Flemish surname or a French one with a Walloon surname, then break the rule now and then. A Julien Peeters or a Sofie Lambert is perfectly ordinary, above all in Brussels.
  • A child born in Belgium since 2014 can be given the father's surname, the mother's or both, so a young character can carry a double name such as Maes Dubois.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Belgian last names?

Peeters and Janssens regularly head the national counts, followed by Maes, Jacobs, Mertens, Willems, Claes, Goossens and Wouters. In Wallonia, Dubois, Lambert, Martin and Dupont are among the leaders. All of them are in the list.

How do Belgian surnames differ from Dutch ones?

Mostly in the writing. Belgium gives the particle a capital and often closes the name up (De Smet, Vandenberghe), while the Netherlands writes it lower case and apart after a first name. Belgian names also keep older spellings, so the list has Peeters, Janssens and Claessens where a Dutch list has Peters, Jansen and Klaassen.

What do De, Van and Ver mean in a Belgian name?

In Flemish names De means the and marks a trade or a nickname: De Backer is the baker, De Vos the fox and De Keyser the emperor. Van means from and comes before a place, as in Van Damme, and Ver is a contraction of van der, so Vermeersch is from the wet meadow. In Walloon names such as Delvaux and Dubois, del and du are French for of the.

Why are some Belgian names written as one word?

Spelling was up to the clerk who entered the name in the registry, and each family kept the form it was given. That is why Desmet stands beside De Smet and Vandenberghe beside Van den Berghe. Neither form is more correct, and the list treats them as separate surnames.
