Browse 500 Luxembourgish names: everyday forms like Jang, Pit, Néckel, Ketti and Léini, the French and German register names behind them, surnames like Schmit, Thill and Kieffer, and full names such as Marguerite Reuland and Félix Reuter that pair a French first name with a German-origin surname.

About Luxembourgish names

Luxembourg runs on three languages, and its names show all of them at once. Luxembourgish is the national language and the one spoken at home, French is the language of law and most paperwork, and German is the third official language. So a man is registered as Jean, Pierre or Nicolas and answers to Jang, Pit or Néckel, and a Catherine is Ketti, Kätt or Tréin to her family.

Surnames come almost entirely from the German-speaking Moselle region, but generations of French-language record keeping left their mark on the spelling: Schmit has a single t, and Muller has dropped its umlaut. Most are trade names. Schmit is the smith, Muller the miller, Weber the weaver, Wagner the cartwright, Kieffer the cooper and Kremer the shopkeeper, while Faber and Molitor are the same smith and miller put into Latin. A French first name in front of one of these surnames, as in Marguerite Reuland or Jean-Paul Seil, is what sets a Luxembourgish name apart from a French, Belgian or German one.

The list mixes single given names, single surnames and full names. It keeps to the traditional stock, so it leaves out the Portuguese, Italian and other surnames that are just as much a part of the country today, where close to half of residents hold a foreign passport.

How to choose Luxembourgish names

  • Use two forms of the same first name. A character can be Nicolas on his identity card, Néckel to his grandmother and Nico to his friends, and the switch tells the reader who is speaking.
  • Keep the Luxembourg spellings: Schmit, Muller, Hoffmann, Schroeder, Kieffer. Writing Schmitt, Müller or Schröder moves the character across the border into Germany.
  • Match the first name to the generation. Aloyse, Gaston, Marguerite and Léonie suit grandparents, Guy, Carlo, Viviane and Joëlle their children, and Ben, Lynn, Anouk and Jil the youngest adults.
  • By custom a married woman may be known by her husband's surname joined to her birth name with a hyphen, as in Kremer-Schmit or Muller-Thill. It suits an older or more formal character.
  • Keep the accents. Luxembourgish spelling uses é, ë and ä, so Néckel, Wëllem, Änder and Fränz lose their sound when the marks are dropped.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common surnames in Luxembourg?

Schmit, Muller, Weber, Hoffmann, Wagner and Thill are generally counted among the most common surnames in Luxembourg, along with Schmitz, Schroeder, Reuter, Klein, Becker, Kieffer and Kremer. Nearly all of them are German in origin, and many name a trade. Every one of them is in this list.

Why do Luxembourgers have French first names and German surnames?

The surnames were fixed centuries ago in a German-speaking farming region, so they are German. First names are recorded by the civil registry, where French has long been the main written language, so the official form is usually the French one: Jean rather than Johann, Pierre rather than Peter. In conversation people still use the Luxembourgish forms, such as Jang and Pit.

What are typical Luxembourgish short forms of first names?

Most traditional first names have an everyday Luxembourgish form. Jean is Jang or Jeng, Pierre is Pit, Nicolas is Néckel or Klos, Michel is Misch, François is Fränz, Charles is Charel, Georges is Schorsch and Guillaume is Wëllem. For women, Catherine gives Ketti, Kätt and Tréin, and Marguerite gives Gréit.

Are these the names of real people?

The given names, short forms and surnames are all in use in Luxembourg. The full names are everyday combinations of them, not a record of particular people, and the list has not been compared with any population register. With surnames as common as Schmit or Weber, a combination can match a living person by chance.
