About european last names

European surnames come in four main types, and the same four turn up in nearly every language. Patronymics name a father or forefather: Jensen (Danish), Jovanović (Serbian), Papadopoulos (Greek) and O'Brien (Irish) all mean a son or descendant of someone. Occupational names record a trade, which is why Smith (English), Schmidt (German), Kovács (Hungarian) and Kováč (Slovak) are one name, the smith, in four languages. Place names point to a farm, a village or a landscape, as in Haugen (Norwegian), the hill, or Etxeberria (Basque), the new house. Nicknames describe a person, like Rossi (Italian) for red hair or Nagy (Hungarian) for big.

Endings often show the country: -ić in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, -ski in Poland and North Macedonia, -escu in Romania, -nen in Finland, -sen and -sson in Scandinavia, -ez in Spain, -enko in Ukraine. Every entry here carries its country or language in parentheses, and a name shared by two neighbors gets a double label.

Several languages change a surname for women. Czech adds -ová, Polish -ski becomes -ska, Russian -ov becomes -ova, and Lithuanian and Latvian have feminine forms too. The list gives one base form for each name. It covers Europe from Iceland to Russia, with Cyprus included. Turkey and the Caucasus are left out.

How to choose european last names

  • Pick the country first and the name second. The label after each entry tells you which tradition it belongs to, so a Latvian character gets Bērziņš and not the Lithuanian Kazlauskas from next door.
  • Keep the accents when the story is set at home: Kovács, Dvořák, Đorđević, Sørensen. Families who moved abroad often dropped them, so Kovacs and Dvorak are right for an emigrant's grandchild.
  • Give a woman the form her language uses. Novák becomes Nováková, Kowalski becomes Kowalska, Smirnov becomes Smirnova and Bērziņš becomes Bērziņa, while a Lithuanian Kazlauskas has a wife called Kazlauskienė and a daughter called Kazlauskaitė.
  • Treat Iceland as a special case. Most Icelanders carry a patronymic such as Jónsson or Jónsdóttir that changes with each generation, and only a small share have an inherited family name like the five in this list.
  • Once you have a country, move on to its own page for more depth. The German, French, Italian, Scandinavian and Slavic surname pages linked below go much further than this overview can.

Frequently asked questions

What are popular last names in Europe?

There is no single list, because every country has its own stock of names. Widely met examples are Müller (German), Martin (French), García (Spanish), Rossi (Italian), Nowak (Polish), Nagy (Hungarian) and Jensen (Danish). All of them are in the list, each with its label.

Why do some entries have two labels?

Some surnames belong to two peoples at once. Horvat (Croatian and Slovenian), Novák (Czech and Slovak) and Horváth (Hungarian and Slovak) are at home on both sides of a border, and Ivanov (Russian and Bulgarian) is shared by two languages that are not even neighbors. A single label says where a name is most at home, not that it is found nowhere else.

How are names from the Cyrillic and Greek alphabets spelled?

They are written in plain Latin letters with sh, ch, zh and ts and no accents, which gives Shevchenko (Ukrainian), Kuznetsov (Russian), Kavalenka (Belarusian) and Papadopoulos (Greek). Serbian and Macedonian names follow the Latin spelling used in those countries, as in Đorđević and Stojanovski. Languages that use the Latin alphabet keep their own letters.

Do Icelanders have last names?

Most do not have a family name. The second name of an Icelander is usually a patronymic built from the father's first name, and it is not passed on to the next generation. The list holds only inherited family names, such as Blöndal and Thorlacius, which a small minority carry.
