About Swiss last names

Switzerland has four national languages, and its surnames divide the same way. Of the 500 names here, about 350 come from German-speaking Switzerland, about 80 from French-speaking Romandy, 36 from Ticino and the Italian-speaking valleys of Graubünden, and 30 from the Romansh areas. The list opens with names that are among the most common, such as Müller, Meier, Schmid, Keller and Weber, in their Swiss spellings: Schmid and Meier rather than Schmidt, umlauts kept, and no ß, which Swiss German does not use.

What sets German Swiss names apart is dialect and landscape. The Alemannic endings -li and -i give Stöckli, Nägeli and Lüthi. Prepositions fuse with a place, so Zumstein is "at the rock" and Andermatt "by the meadow"; the same habit gives Zbinden, Imboden and Amstutz. Names such as von Allmen, von Gunten and von Känel belong here too: in the Bernese Oberland and central Switzerland, von points to the farm or hamlet a family came from and is not a title.

Romandy adds Favre, Rochat and the double names of Neuchâtel such as Perret-Gentil. Ticino has Bernasconi, Crivelli and Rezzonico. Many Romansh names start with Ca-, from casa, "house", so Cathomas is the house of Thomas. Valais is split: Zurbriggen and Supersaxo in the German-speaking upper valley, Bonvin and Zufferey in the French-speaking lower one.

How to choose Swiss last names

  • Pick by canton. A Bernese farmer can be a Zbinden or a Wüthrich, an innkeeper in Uri a Gisler or a Zgraggen, a watchmaker in the Neuchâtel mountains a Jeanneret or a Huguenin, and a lawyer in Lugano a Bernasconi or a Pedrazzini.
  • Keep the Swiss spelling. Write Müller, Rüegg and Bärtschi with their umlauts; where a format cannot show them, the accepted fallback is ue, ae and oe. Do not put ß in a Swiss name: Swiss German writes ss.
  • Do not read von as a title. Von Allmen, von Siebenthal and von Flüe are names of origin written with a lower-case von, so a mountain guide or a dairy farmer can carry one.
  • Match the first name to the language of the surname: Urs or Regula with Aeschlimann, Jean-Luc or Céline with Rochat, Matteo or Chiara with Crivelli, Gian or Ladina with Caduff. The Swiss Name Generator on this site deals full names if you want both at once.
  • For a town character such as a merchant, a professor or a city councillor, try one of the list's town surnames, such as Burckhardt, Merian, Escher or Pictet. For a villager, a farm name like Zbinden or Odermatt fits better.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Swiss last names?

Müller, Meier, Schmid, Keller, Weber, Huber, Brunner and Steiner are among the most common surnames in Switzerland, and they open this list. Schneider, Fischer, Gerber, Baumann, Frei and Moser are widespread too. This page gives no ranks or counts, because which names lead depends heavily on the canton and the language region.

How are Swiss surnames different from German ones?

German-speaking Switzerland shares names like Müller, Weber and Fischer with Germany, but Schmid and Meier are the usual Swiss spellings and ß is never used. Names built on Swiss German dialect, such as Zbinden, Wüthrich, Aeschlimann, Odermatt and Rüegg, are closely tied to Switzerland. On top of that come whole groups with no German counterpart: French names like Rochat, Italian ones like Bernasconi and Romansh ones like Caduff.

Does von in a Swiss surname mean the family is noble?

No, the particle alone says nothing about rank in Switzerland. Names such as von Allmen, von Gunten, von Känel and von Siebenthal come from the Bernese Oberland, and von Flüe, von Rotz and von Matt from central Switzerland. There von simply tells which farm, hamlet or slope a family came from.

Does the list include first names or full names?

No, it holds surnames only, one per entry. Double names such as Perret-Gentil, Humbert-Droz, Gay-Crosier and Croci-Torti are single hereditary surnames and are listed the way they are written. For given names paired with surnames, use the Swiss Name Generator.
