Literary Journal Name Generator
Titles for reviews, quarterlies and lit mags
Generate literary journal names for a student review, an independent print quarterly, an online lit mag or a science fiction and fantasy magazine. The 1,000 ideas run from The Saltgrass Review and Tin Roof Quarterly to Foolscap & Fig, the small hours and Voidlark: A Journal of Speculative Fiction.
About literary journal names
Literary journals are named in a handful of recognizable ways. The oldest pattern sets a place in front of Review or Quarterly, and a plant or a landmark works the same way, which makes a first issue sound as if it has a long run behind it. Others take one plain noun, pair two with an ampersand, or borrow a term from the print shop. Online journals often set the whole title in lowercase, and science fiction and fantasy magazines tend to say what they publish in a subtitle.
The 1,000 names here are dealt from 18 styles: Review titles built on invented places (The Saltgrass Review), quarterlies and annuals, subtitled journals, letters and papers, single nouns, printing and punctuation terms (Em Space, Hanging Indent), birds, plants, weather, streets and room numbers, campus titles with no real campus, lowercase online stylings, poetry terms, flash fiction titles, science fiction, fantasy and the weird, ampersand pairs, and workshop terms. The place words are invented or generic on purpose, because a real town or college in front of Review usually belongs to a journal that exists.
Thousands of small journals are publishing right now and good short names get reused, so some of these will already be on a masthead somewhere. Search before you choose.
How to choose literary journal names
- Say the name inside a contributor bio: "her poems appear in Tin Roof Quarterly". If it sounds natural there and in a cover letter, it will work on a spine.
- Choose the form word on purpose. Review suggests criticism alongside poems and stories, Quarterly promises four issues a year, and Journal is neutral. Leave the form word off if your schedule is not settled.
- Search the name together with "literary journal", "review" and "magazine", look through the submission directories writers use, and check the domain and social handles. A short noun has very likely been used before.
- Swap an invented place for one that is really yours, such as a creek, a street or a building your staff walks past. Name a town or a college only if the journal is actually tied to it.
- For a genre magazine, put the genre in a subtitle. A line such as "A Journal of Speculative Fiction" tells writers what to send and saves you a slush pile of the wrong thing.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good literary journal name?
It is short enough for a spine and a web address, easy to say aloud at a reading, and it carries a mood instead of describing the contents. The Saltgrass Review, Foolscap & Fig and Fourteen Lines all suggest a tone without promising any one kind of writing.
Can I use one of these names for my own journal?
Yes, the ideas are free to use, but we have not checked whether a journal already publishes under any of them. Thousands of small magazines exist and evocative nouns are popular, so search the name, look through submission directories and check the domain before you print a masthead.
Are there names for science fiction and fantasy magazines?
Yes. Two of the styles are for speculative magazines, with titles such as The Lagrange Point, Generation Ship, Barrow & Bough and Salt Circle. There are also subtitled forms, for example Starwake: A Journal of Science Fiction and Hollow Hill: A Journal of Fantasy.
What should a student or campus literary magazine be called?
Student journals often take a name from shared campus life instead of the school's own name, which keeps the title yours if the school already has an official review. Finals Week, Third Floor Stacks, The Quadrangle and Sophomore Slump are examples from this list. A room number, a staircase or a study spot that everyone on your campus knows works the same way.
