About literary trivia team names

A literary quiz team name works when the room gets the reference in the second it takes the host to read it out. The reliable formula is a famous title, line or character with one word swapped for something from quiz night: Catch-22 Points, Much Ado About Guessing, Richard the Third Place. The better known the source, the smaller the change needs to be.

The 1,000 names here draw on many kinds of source so that rerolls feel different: nineteenth-century novels, Shakespeare, modern classics, children's books, poetry and its terms, fantasy and science fiction, crime and detective fiction, plays and world literature, epics and gothic tales. Others play on grammar and punctuation, on narrative terms (Deus Ex Quizmachina, Foreshadowing Our Defeat), on well-known characters (Miss Havisham's Wedding Planners), on famous first lines and on the language of publishing. A last group mocks its own score in a bookish voice: We Only Read the Blurb, Well Read, Poorly Scored.

These are team names, not club names, so they are written to be read off a scoresheet. Most are under six words and need no explanation. Pick a source your whole table knows, because someone at the next table will ask.

How to choose literary trivia team names

  • Match the name to the room. A general pub quiz gets the famous titles (Of Mice and Pens), while a literature society or English department night can take Anagnorisis Too Late or Bad Quarto.
  • Say it out loud before you write it down. The host reads it after every round, and a joke that only works in print, such as Teh Typos, will need spelling out.
  • Self-mocking names hold up over a long night. If you are last after round four, Well Read, Poorly Scored still sounds like wit, and a boastful name does not.
  • For a themed quiz, pick from the matching style: A Study in Scarlet Faces for a crime fiction night, The Comedy of Errata for a Shakespeare quiz.
  • Check the size of the name box on the answer sheet. The long quotation names work best when the host has a microphone and the patience to read them.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good literary quiz team name?

A reference most of the room knows, changed by one word so that it points at the quiz. Crime and Punctuation and Tess of the Tiebreakers work because the original title is still easy to hear. Obscure sources need a table, and a host, who will get them.

Can a book club use these names?

They are written as quiz team names, so the jokes are about scores, rounds and wrong answers, not about meeting to read. A reading group will find a better fit on the site's book club name generator. For a one-off quiz night between book clubs, any name here will do.

How is the list of 1,000 names organized?

It mixes puns on novels, plays and poems with jokes about grammar, narrative terms, famous characters and first lines, plus names that make fun of a low score. The styles are shuffled together, so one batch can put Alice in Blunderland beside Their, There, They're Wrong.

Are the names suitable for a work or family quiz?

Yes for most rooms. The register is adult pub quiz but clean: no crude jokes and no drink names as punchlines, though a few names mention the bar the quiz is held in. The darkest the list gets is a crime fiction pun such as A Murder Is Mispronounced or a grim quotation such as Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here.
