About lightsaber names

Lightsabers are rarely named in the films, which is exactly why fans name their own. The one famous exception, the Darksaber, sets the pattern: a short, concrete name that says what the blade is and hints at who carries it. A Jedi's saber name should sound like a vow or a place of learning, so words like oath, vigil, accord, pilgrim and the kyber worlds Ilum and Jedha fit. A Sith blade borrows the language of wounds and hunger, drawing on Korriban, Malachor, Mustafar and Exegol, and on the bleeding of a crystal that turns it red.

The best names come from something specific to your character: the seven combat forms (Soresu's Patience, Djem So Thunder), the crystal's colour (Viridian Oath, Amber Arbiter, a purified white blade), the hilt's shape (Crossguard Vigil, Curved Hilt Mercy, Saberstaff Storm), or the event the saber survived (Ashes of Order Sixty-Six, Survivor's Grudge). Aurebesh letters such as Aurek, Besh and Cresh make clean single-word names for a saber that belongs to a legion or a numbered Inquisitor.

The list mixes single words, two-word titles, possessives and place-names, and it avoids canon saber names so that what you choose is yours. Many also double as names for a real custom saber from a builder or a cosplay prop.

How to choose lightsaber names

Pick the name after you decide the crystal colour and the hilt style; a white or yellow blade wants a calmer name than a bled red one.
Reuse a planet that matters to your character's story (Ilum, Jedha, Lothal, Dathomir) rather than the most famous one; it reads as personal instead of generic.
Keep it to one to four words. Long titles work in a character sheet but feel clumsy when a duelist says them aloud.
For a Sith or dark-side saber, avoid the word 'evil' and lean on hunger, ruin, ash and spite; for a Mandalorian saber, use beskar, clan and Sundari references.
If you are naming a physical custom saber, check the name is not already used by a major saber maker for one of their hilt models.

Frequently asked questions

Do lightsabers in Star Wars actually have names?

Almost never in the films. The Darksaber is the best-known named blade, and a few Legends-era weapons and holocron texts carry names, but most Jedi and Sith simply refer to 'my lightsaber'. Naming a saber is a fan and roleplay tradition, and it is common among custom saber owners.

What makes a good Sith lightsaber name?

Something that sounds like a wound or a promise of revenge: Wrath of Korriban, Bleeding Kyber, Ruin of Dathomir, Crimson Tithe. Sith sabers are made by bleeding a crystal through pain and rage, so names built on hunger, ash, spite and the dark-side worlds fit the lore.

Can I use these names for a custom saber I bought or built?

Yes. The names are original and free to use for a hilt, a display plaque, a cosplay prop or a character. Only a handful reference canon planets and forms, which is fine for personal use.
