Star Wars ship names split into a few clear families, and matching the right family to the right hull is what makes a name feel like it belongs in the galaxy. Smuggler and bounty hunter freighters carry personal, often ironic names: Millennium Falcon, Moldy Crow, Razor Crest, Wild Karrde, Lady Luck. Many are birds or predators, and most sound like a captain named them with a smirk. This is the family to draw from for player-character ships in an RPG or for any tramp freighter with a hidden compartment.

Imperial and First Order capital ships take single, intimidating abstract nouns: Executor, Devastator, Chimaera, Tyrant, Judicator, Finalizer, Supremacy. The Empire does not name ships after people or places; it names them after what it intends to do to you. Republic and Rebel vessels invert that with virtues and ideals such as Resolute, Negotiator, Redemption, Liberty, Home One, and Profundity, sometimes honoring a fallen leader as in the Raddus.

A good original name should tell you which side named it in a single word. Pair a Star Destroyer with something like Inexorable or Coercion, a Mon Calamari cruiser with Deliverance or Concordia, and a freighter with something a scoundrel would say out loud, like Bad Feeling or Kessel Runner.
