Swords get grand names in fiction, but knives get personal ones. A named sword announces a hero; a named knife hints at what its owner does in the dark. That is why the best knife names skew short, dry and slightly menacing: Needle (Arya Stark's rapier is really a thin thrusting blade), the Widow's Kiss, Old Sawtooth, the Letter Opener. A knife with a wry name tells you the person carrying it has a sense of humor about violence, which is exactly what you want for a rogue, an assassin, a smuggler or a grim veteran.

There are four reliable patterns. Compound forged names (Whisperfang, Bonecutter, Duskrazor) are the classic RPG loot style and work well in game inventories. Single evocative words (Sliver, Vesper, Malice, Adder) feel like the kind of name a character gives a blade they've carried for years. Ironic nicknames with an article (the Persuader, the Argument, the Tax Collector) suit criminal underworlds and gritty fantasy. Formal styles built around a real dagger type (Rondel of the Grey Ward, Dagger of Saint Corvin, Serpent Kris) suggest an artifact with a history, and dropping in the actual weapon name (dirk, misericorde, stiletto, seax, kukri, baselard) makes the item feel researched.

Mix registers deliberately. A relic dagger in a temple deserves the formal style; the shiv in a thief's boot deserves a joke.
