About knife names

Swords get grand names in fiction, but knives get personal ones. A named sword announces a hero; a named knife hints at what its owner does in the dark. That is why the best knife names skew short, dry and slightly menacing: Needle (Arya Stark's rapier is really a thin thrusting blade), the Widow's Kiss, Old Sawtooth, the Letter Opener. A knife with a wry name tells you the person carrying it has a sense of humor about violence, which is exactly what you want for a rogue, an assassin, a smuggler or a grim veteran.

There are four reliable patterns. Compound forged names (Whisperfang, Bonecutter, Duskrazor) are the classic RPG loot style and work well in game inventories. Single evocative words (Sliver, Vesper, Malice, Adder) feel like the kind of name a character gives a blade they've carried for years. Ironic nicknames with an article (the Persuader, the Argument, the Tax Collector) suit criminal underworlds and gritty fantasy. Formal styles built around a real dagger type (Rondel of the Grey Ward, Dagger of Saint Corvin, Serpent Kris) suggest an artifact with a history, and dropping in the actual weapon name (dirk, misericorde, stiletto, seax, kukri, baselard) makes the item feel researched.

Mix registers deliberately. A relic dagger in a temple deserves the formal style; the shiv in a thief's boot deserves a joke.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Use the real blade type. Calling it a misericorde, rondel, kukri, dirk or seax adds instant authenticity and hints at the culture that forged it.
  • Short and dry beats long and epic for knives. One or two words (Sliver, Cold Comfort) says 'this person has used this' better than a five-word title.
  • Give a criminal character an ironic nickname for their blade (the Negotiator, the Apology). It's characterization you don't have to explain.
  • For magic daggers, tie the name to the effect: Coldkiss for a frost blade, Hush for a silencing weapon, Backbiter for one that returns to the hand.
  • If the knife has a maker or previous owner, put them in the name (Grandmother's Needle, Baselard of Kessendria) to seed backstory.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous named knives and daggers in fiction and history?

Arya Stark carries Needle in Game of Thrones and Catspaw is the Valyrian dagger from the same story; Sting is Bilbo and Frodo's blade in Tolkien; the historical Rondel and Misericorde were used to finish armored knights, and Jim Bowie's Bowie knife became a legend on its own. Most follow the same rule: short, pointed, personal.

How is naming a knife different from naming a sword?

Swords tend to get heroic, public names (Excalibur, Anduril). Knives are concealed and intimate weapons, so their names lean quiet, ironic or predatory: Whisper, Adder, the Persuader. A knife name should sound like a secret.

Can I use these names for a real custom knife or knife business?

Yes, they're free to use, and single-word names like Kestrel, Shrike or Blackglass work well engraved on a custom blade. If you're branding a company, run a trademark search first.

Which names work best for a D&D rogue's dagger?

Anything that fits the rogue's personality: a swashbuckler might carry the Argument, an assassin something like Hush or Sliver, and a magic +1 dagger deserves a compound name like Whisperfang or Coldkiss.
