About aetherborn names

Aetherborn are the short-lived people of Kaladesh in Magic: The Gathering, formed as a byproduct of aether refinement and playable in D&D through the Plane Shift: Kaladesh supplement. An aetherborn comes into being as an adult, with no parents, no family line and no gender, and knows its time is short. That shapes the names: there is no surname to inherit, so an aetherborn picks a single name for itself or accepts one that friends start using.

Only three aetherborn from the cards are widely known: Yahenni, Gonti and Kambal. Their names are soft and rich in vowels, two or three syllables long, with a South Asian tint that matches the rest of the plane. About half of this list follows that model with original names such as Senbi, Ovanni, Tesheri and Mahul. The rest covers the other ways an aetherborn gets known: card-style names with an epithet in the manner of Gonti, Lord of Luxury (Tamvi, Broker of Favors), bynames about a short life lived loudly (Oshti the Brief, Vernu Last-to-Leave), word names given by friends (Glimmer, Wisp) and revel-scene nicknames (Last Toast, Open Tab).

None of the names is marked as male or female. Pick by sound, and by what the character means to do with the time it has.

How to choose aetherborn names

  • Start with a single name. An aetherborn has no family name, so Rohati or Jhuri is a complete name; add an epithet only once the character has a reputation.
  • Let the epithet say what the character does in Ghirapur: Luhani, Night Market Fixer reads as underworld, Avendu, Consul of Small Hours as a schemer with a seat at the table, and Esuni, Dancer at Dawn as a reveler.
  • A name given by friends suits a newly made aetherborn. Word names such as Newlight, Mote and Brief Candle sound like something a crowd started calling them on their first night out.
  • Put the ticking clock in the name when the story turns on it. Bynames such as Yambri Four-Years and Nemhu Half-Gone tell the table how long the character has been around and how long it may have left.
  • Keep the name genderless in your notes as well. Aetherborn have no gender, so a name that leans clearly male or female in a real language will read as wrong for the race.

Frequently asked questions

What are aetherborn?

Aetherborn are a people of the plane of Kaladesh in Magic: The Gathering. They form as a byproduct of the aether refinement process, arrive as adults and live only a short time, which is why so many of them chase pleasure and new experiences. The Plane Shift: Kaladesh supplement gives rules for playing one in D&D fifth edition. In the 2025 Aetherdrift set the plane goes by its new name, Avishkar.

Which of these names are canon?

Three: Yahenni, Gonti and Kambal, the aetherborn most players know from the Kaladesh block. Every other name in the list, from Ovanni and Senbi to Tamvi, Broker of Favors, is an original in the same style, so treat it as yours to use and not as lore.

Do aetherborn have surnames or gendered names?

No. An aetherborn has no parents and no gender, so there is no family name to pass on and no male or female form. A single chosen name such as Rohati or Kurali is the whole name, and anything after it is an epithet or byname picked up later.

Can I use these names for a D&D aetherborn?

Yes. The single names suit any class, the epithet names such as Meshuri, Gilded Conspirator and Zavri, Gremlin Wrangler make ready NPCs, and nicknames like Velvet Rope or Borrowed Time work as aliases for a rogue or a warlock. They also fit custom cards and Commander deck names.
