Name the sellswords of your Battle Brothers company: plain recruits like Sigbold and Ortwin, earned titles like Hartwig Fatfingers and Lothar the Unlucky, northern raiders, southern nomads, disowned nobles and war dogs, plus company names such as The Hollow Crows.

About Battle Brothers names

Battle Brothers, the turn-based mercenary game from Overhype Studios, gives each recruit a plain given name with a medieval German sound and only sometimes a title. The rest is up to you: the game lets you edit a brother's name and title, and many players do it after a fight, when a man has lost an ear, held a line alone or run from his first orc. This unofficial, fan-made list follows that habit. Common given names aside, it is not copied from the game's pools.

The 1,000 names come in a dozen styles. There are bare recruit names (Sigbold, Dietmar, Ortwin); titles for scars and looks (Dietmar One-Ear, Hartwig Fatfingers), for deeds (Otto Who Held the Bridge) and for habits (Lothar the Unlucky); titles taken from a background, such as Ottmar the Gravedigger; and origin bynames like Konrad of Weidenau. Northern barbarians carry Norse names (Ragnvald Bearhide), the southern city-states and nomads Arabic ones (Hamid the Sandwalker, Idris al-Haddad), and disowned nobles a von name (Bodo von Wildenstein). Bandit chiefs, orc warlords, necromancers and war dogs follow.

About one name in seven is a company name, from The Hollow Crows to The Company of the Mended Banner. Battle-brothers is also what the Space Marines of Warhammer 40,000 call each other, and our Space Marine name generator covers those.

How to choose Battle Brothers names

  • Start plain. Leave a new recruit as Sigbold or Ortwin and add the title after the fight that earns it; a roster where every man arrives with a grand title reads false.
  • Tie the title to something on the character sheet: a permanent injury (Dietmar One-Ear), a habit (Gerlach the Glutton), a background (Rudolf the Ratcatcher) or the kill that made his name (Konrad Orcbane).
  • Keep most titles short so the roster reads at a glance. Hartwig Fatfingers is quicker on the eye than Ludwig the Last Man Standing, which is best saved for one veteran.
  • Match the name to where the man was hired: Norse names for northern barbarians, Arabic names for the southern city-states and the nomads, and von names only for disowned nobles and hedge knights.
  • Name the company for its fortunes, not its hopes. The Unpaid Dozen or The Muddy Boots suits a band on its first contract, and our mercenary company and mercenary band pages hold many more.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Battle Brothers name list?

No. This is an unofficial fan page with no connection to Overhype Studios. The game deals names from its own pools, and this list was drafted in the same spirit rather than taken from them: German, Norse and Arabic given names for the human characters (common ones inevitably turn up in the game too), titles that are either the game's own backgrounds, such as the Poacher or the Hedge Knight, or drafted for this page, and invented names for orcs and goblins. Hexen carry German women's names and the ancient dead Roman ones.

Can I rename my brothers in the game?

Yes. In the character screen you can click a brother's name and change both his name and his title. That makes it easy to hire a man as plain Hartmut and promote him to Hartmut Hardhead once he has earned it.

What makes a good company name in Battle Brothers?

You type the company name when you start a campaign, so pick one you can live with for a long run. Short names with one concrete image work well: The Hollow Crows, The Short Straws, Hartwig's Hounds. A name that admits the company is poor, tired or unlucky fits the tone of the game better than a heroic one.

Which names fit northern and southern recruits?

The barbarians of the north carry Norse names, here Thorkel Frostbeard or Vigfus Wolfbrother. Men from the southern city-states and the desert nomads carry Arabic names, such as Tariq Dunerider or Nasir the Nomad. Keep the von names, like Hagen von Steinach, for disowned nobles and hedge knights.
