Jungle Tribe Name Generator
Rainforest peoples for fantasy maps and survival games
Generate names for fictional rainforest peoples: animal-totem clans, canopy and river folk, temple guardians and survival-game tribes, such as The Jaguar People, Children of the Canopy, The Rainspeakers and Keepers of the Sunken Temple.
About jungle tribe names
A rainforest people in fiction is usually named for what stands around it: the animal it honors, the layer of the forest it lives in, the river that carries its canoes, or the weather that rules its year. This list is built the same way. It holds 1,000 names in sixteen styles, from totem peoples such as The Jaguar People and Macaw Feather Clan to canopy and root names, river names, rain and thunder names, craft names like The Canoe Builders, and the guardians of overgrown ruins.
Most entries are plain descriptive English, because a name a reader can picture does more work on a map than an unfamiliar word. A small share are invented ethnonyms such as The Vellomere and The Quorrith, made up for this page and belonging to no language. You will also find names for lizardfolk, catfolk and other fantasy jungle species, short punchy names for survival-game tribes, and feared rivals named from thorns, venom and storms.
Every name here is meant for fiction and games. None is intended as the name of a real people, and the list should not be used to label one. For real nations, see the native tribe name generator and the African tribe name generator, and use each people's own name and spelling.
How to choose jungle tribe names
- Pick the part of the forest first. A people of the canopy (The Vine Walkers), the floor (The Leaf Litter People) or the riverbank (The Blackwater People) will build, travel and fight differently, and the name tells players that at once.
- Give neighbors names in different styles. A totem people beside a craft people beside a league of villages reads like a lived-in region, while five animal clans in a row blur together.
- Add a second name from outside. A people who call themselves Children of the Canopy may be known downriver as Those Who Sleep in the Trees, and the gap between the two names is a story hook.
- For a feared rival, name a danger of the forest itself: thorns, venom, floods, storms. The Thornbound is more menacing than a pulp cliche, and it treats the people as people.
- In survival games, look up the tribe name length limit before you commit, and say the name aloud once. Short names like Vinefang or Mudclaw are easier to call out in voice chat.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good jungle tribe name?
A good one ties the people to a particular spot in the rainforest rather than to the jungle in general. The Strangler Fig Kin, Seven Rapids Tribe and The Honey Gatherers each tell you where the people live or what they do, which is more useful at the table than a name that only says jungle.
Are these the names of real rainforest peoples?
No. The names are written for fiction and games, most of them in descriptive English and a small share as plainly invented words. If you are writing about a real people of the Amazon, the Congo Basin, Borneo or anywhere else, use their own name and spelling; the native tribe name generator and the African tribe name generator on this site list real peoples.
Can I use these names in ARK, a D&D campaign or a novel?
Yes, they are meant for exactly that. Short entries such as Vinefang, Canopy Crew and Rootbreakers suit survival-game tribes, while longer ones such as Keepers of the Sunken Temple or Greenscale Lizardfolk of the Fern Deep fit a campaign map. Check your game's own naming rules before you settle on one.
How do I name a rival or enemy tribe without leaning on stereotypes?
Name them after what makes the forest dangerous: predators, storms, poisons and thorns. The Bushmaster Fangs, Stormbreak Reavers and The Nettle Hand sound threatening without the lurid tropes of old adventure fiction. Then give them a reason for the feud, such as a river or a ruin both sides claim.
