About african tribe names
Africa is home to somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 distinct peoples, and their names follow patterns worth knowing. Many Bantu-speaking groups carry a people-prefix: Ba- in Baganda, Bakongo and Batswana, Ova- in Ovambo and Ovimbundu, Wa- in Swahili usage (Wachagga, Wasukuma). English and French writers usually drop the prefix, which is why you see both Ganda and Baganda, Kongo and Bakongo, Tswana and Batswana. Nigeria alone has more than 250 ethnic groups, Ethiopia over 80, Cameroon over 200, so the big names (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Amhara, Oromo) sit alongside hundreds of peoples numbering only a few thousand.
Many names exist in two forms: what a people call themselves and what neighbours or colonial administrators called them. Amazigh is preferred over Berber, San or the specific Ju/'hoansi over Bushmen, Fulbe is the self-name behind Fulani and Peul, and Somba are also the Betammaribe. Several groups are confederations rather than single tribes: Akan includes Ashanti and Fante, Kalenjin includes Nandi and Kipsigis, and Tuareg is made up of confederations like the Kel Aïr.
This list covers West, Central, East, Southern and North Africa plus Madagascar, giving preference to each people's own name where it is widely used. It is a starting point for research, quizzes and fiction set in real places, not a source of names for invented fantasy cultures.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide which level you mean: a broad grouping (Akan, Kalenjin, Amazigh, Bakongo) or a specific people within it (Fante, Nandi, Kabyle, Vili), and use the one a local would use.
- Prefer the people's own name where it is established: Amazigh not Berber, San or Ju/'hoansi not Bushmen, Fulbe alongside Fulani, Otuho alongside Lotuko.
- Check the country and language family before writing about a group; Lamba, Bassa, Tonga and Teke each name different peoples in different countries.
- Many Africans consider 'tribe' a colonial word and prefer 'people', 'ethnic group' or 'nation'; match the term your readers and sources use.
- For a fantasy or game setting, invent a name rather than borrowing a real people's, and use real names only for stories set in the real Africa where you can research them properly.
Frequently asked questions
How many tribes are there in Africa?
Estimates run from about 2,000 to over 3,000 ethnic groups depending on how subgroups are counted. Nigeria alone recognizes more than 250, Cameroon over 200 and Ethiopia over 80; the Democratic Republic of the Congo has roughly 250 and Tanzania around 120.
What are the largest ethnic groups in Africa?
By population the biggest are the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo of West Africa, the Oromo and Amhara of Ethiopia, the Fulani spread across the Sahel, the Akan of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, the Zulu of South Africa, the Shona of Zimbabwe, and the Kikuyu of Kenya, each numbering in the tens of millions.
Is it wrong to say 'tribe'?
It depends on context. The word is still used in everyday English in many African countries, but scholars and many Africans prefer 'ethnic group', 'people' or 'nation' because 'tribe' carries colonial connotations and implies smallness or primitiveness. The people-specific names in this list work with any of those terms.
Are these real African tribe names or made up?
All of them are real peoples of Africa, from large nations like the Yoruba and Zulu to smaller groups such as the Hadza, Mikea and El Molo. If you need invented names for a fictional setting, use a fantasy tribe or clan generator instead.
