Cerberus Name Generator
Three-headed names for the hound of Hades
Generate cerberus names for a three-headed guard dog: sets of three with one name per head, like Ash, Ember & Cinder or Biscuit, Gravy & Beans, plus single names and titles such as Kerberos the Unsleeping and Old Three-Bark. Made for D&D monsters, game pets, plush toys and story characters.
About Cerberus names
In Greek myth Kerberos, Latinized as Cerberus, is the hound of Hades. He guards the gate of the underworld, lets the dead in and lets nobody out. The myth names the dog, never his heads, and it does not even agree on how many there are: Hesiod gives him fifty, and three became the usual number in later poetry and art. That leaves the heads free for you to name.
Most of this list is therefore sets of three, one name per head, written as a single entry. There are fire and ash sets like Ash, Ember & Cinder, Greek sets such as Styx, Lethe & Acheron or the underworld judges Minos, Rhadamanthus & Aeacus, personality sets (Grumpy, Sleepy & Hungry), food sets for a friendly cerberus (Biscuit, Gravy & Beans), and rhyming, alliterative and counting sets. The rest are single names for the whole animal: plays on three such as Trey and Old Three-Bark, epithets like Kerberos the Unsleeping, gatekeeper titles and puppy names.
Pick by tone. A boss monster wants a title or a grim set, a game pet or a plush wants a short set that is quick to say, and a comic cerberus is funniest when the third head breaks the pattern, as in Head One, Head Two & Kevin.
How to choose Cerberus names
- Say a set out loud as one call, the way you would shout it across a room. Sets with short, punchy parts (Zip, Zap & Zop; Jaw, Paw & Claw) are the ones a table or a household keeps using.
- Give each head a job before you choose. Lookout, Muscle & Mouthpiece or Leader, Follower & Napper tells you how the three heads argue, which is most of the fun of writing or roleplaying a cerberus.
- For a D&D or game boss, use a title for the stat block and a set for the heads: Warden of the Last Gate can still answer to Dread, Dirge & Dusk.
- For Greek flavor, stay with one spelling system in your story, either Greek (Kerberos, Tartaros) or Latin (Cerberus, Tartarus), and use the real river and place names of the underworld.
- A plush or a friendly pet suits food and puppy sets. If three names are too many for a tag, pick a single name that carries the three, such as Tripp, Trixie or Six Eyes.
Frequently asked questions
What are the names of the three heads of Cerberus?
They have none in Greek myth. The ancient sources name the dog and describe him, but they do not give the heads names of their own, so every set you meet is a modern invention. That is the gap this list fills, with sets such as Alpha, Beta & Gamma and Dawn, Noon & Dusk.
Did Cerberus always have three heads?
No. Hesiod's Theogony gives him fifty heads, and three is the number that later poets and artists settled on. He is also often described with a snake for a tail. Names built on three, like Trey or Trefoil, follow the best-known version.
Is it Cerberus or Kerberos?
Both are right. Kerberos is the Greek form and Cerberus is the Latin spelling that English took over. The list uses both, so you will find Kerberos Trikranos, built on a Greek word for three-headed, next to Cerberus Triceps, which uses the Latin one.
How many cerberus names are in the list?
There are 1,000. About seven in ten are sets of three with one name per head, and the rest are single names, titles and epithets for the whole dog, from Hound of Asphodel to Sir Yips-a-Lot the Third.
