About star wars species names

Star Wars species names are mostly short, pronounceable and slightly rough around the edges. Many are demonyms: the name is the homeworld plus -an, -ian or -ese, so Rodians come from Rodia, Kaminoans from Kamino, Mon Calamari from Mon Cala and Ithorians from Ithor. Others are standalone words with a distinctive texture: doubled consonants and hard stops (Wookiee, Hutt, Jawa, Gungan), apostrophes that mark a glottal catch (Twi'lek, Pau'an, Er'Kit, Ho'Din), or two-part names that sound like a people and a place (Kel Dor, Ishi Tib, Yuuzhan Vong). Almost nothing runs past three syllables, and the letters K, T, Z and doubled vowels do a lot of the work.

The first part of this list is the canon roster from the films, The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian, the novels and Legends, including Legends-only peoples such as the Yuuzhan Vong, Ssi-ruuk and Miraluka. The rest are original species that follow the same habits, so a Vashtari or a Kel Orun can sit in a cantina scene beside a Bothan without sounding out of place. Use a demonym-style name when you also want a homeworld, and a standalone name when you want a people whose origin is mysterious or long lost.

Everything is written so you can form an adjective naturally: Zabrak, Zabraks; Drevashi, Drevashi traders; Orenite, Orenite smugglers.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the species name doubles as the planet name. Rodian/Rodia and Umbaran/Umbara feel native to Star Wars; if you name the species first, back-form the world by dropping the suffix (Vashtari becomes Vashtar).
  • Keep it to one to three syllables and one hard consonant. Names like Gand, Duros and Talz read as Star Wars; long elvish strings of vowels and soft sounds read as a different franchise.
  • Use an apostrophe sparingly and only where a real pause would sit. Twi'lek and Pau'an work because they are short; three apostrophes in one name looks like parody.
  • For a tabletop game or fan fiction, pair the species with one trait the name hints at: a sibilant name like Ssi-ruuk suits a reptilian people, a clipped one like Gotal suits something stocky and blunt.
  • Check canon before you publish. Many invented-sounding names already belong to an obscure species on Wookieepedia, so a quick search saves an accidental overlap with established lore.

Frequently asked questions

Are all of these real Star Wars species?

No. Roughly the first 200 are canon or Legends species from the films, series, comics, games and novels, including well-known ones like Wookiee, Twi'lek and Chiss and obscure ones like Dowutin, Anzellan and Tchuukthai. The remainder are original names written in the same style for fan fiction, RPGs and original settings, and do not belong to any established species.

Is there a difference between a Star Wars species and a race?

Official sources use species for biologically distinct peoples (Wookiees, Hutts, Twi'leks) and reserve race or culture for groups within a species, such as Mandalorians, Nightsisters and Sith Purebloods. A few cultural groups are included here because players search for them, but most entries are true species.

How do I name an individual character from one of these species?

Look at how canon handles it: Wookiee names are long and growly (Chewbacca, Tarfful), Rodians get short clipped names like Greedo or Wald, and Twi'lek names are soft and vowel-heavy like Hera Syndulla or Bib Fortuna. For an original species, pick two or three sounds from the species name and reuse them in personal names so the whole culture feels consistent. The Star Wars name generator has full character names.

Can I use the original species in a published Star Wars RPG adventure or fan film?

The original names are free to use in your own work. Canon species names belong to Lucasfilm and should be used only in the way fan works normally use them, not in commercial products that imply official licensing.
