About Half-Elf last names

A half-elf rarely has a surname tradition of their own. In most fantasy settings the family name comes from one parent's people, most often whichever raised the child, so the first question is where your character grew up. A childhood in a human town usually means a plain human surname from a trade, a place or a father's name: Fletcher, Ashby, Garrickson. A childhood among elves means an elven family name such as Vaelis or Sylmareth, or a Common-tongue rendering such as Dusksong or Rainharp.

The names that belong to half-elves alone come from living between the two. Some families hyphenate both lines (Vaelis-Harrow, Marsh-Teliandre) or fuse them into one word (Brookelith). An elven name often gets worn down to something a human clerk can spell, which gives Vayle, Merrin and Caldry. Others take a byname about standing in the middle, such as Halfmoon, Betwixt or Bridgeward, or keep the name a temple gave a foundling, such as Almsgate or Winterfound. Go-betweens earn names like Tonguespan and Oathbridge, and some name the border place they come from: of the Border Fords, of Greenmarch.

The list mixes all of these styles with a small share of example surnames from the 2014 fifth edition Player's Handbook, which the FAQ below names.

How to choose Half-Elf last names

  • Start with who raised the character. A half-elf brought up in a human town most often carries a human surname, and one raised among elves an elven one, although the 2014 fifth edition handbook notes that the custom is often reversed to mark the child as belonging to neither side.
  • Use a hyphenated name such as Sylvar-Dunne when both parents matter to the story, and decide which half the character drops when they want to pass unnoticed.
  • A softened name such as Vayle or Thalen suits a family that has lived among humans for generations and no longer remembers the long elven form.
  • Keep bynames such as Betwixt or Twohearths for characters who chose the name themselves. Given by others, the same name can read as a taunt, which is a story hook of its own.
  • Say the surname aloud with the first name. A long elven given name sits best with a short surname, while a short human first name can carry a long one such as of the Hazel Fringe.

Frequently asked questions

Do half-elves have last names in D&D?

Yes. The 2014 fifth edition Player's Handbook gives half-elves no surname list of their own and says they use either human or elven naming conventions. In practice that means a human family name, an elven family name or, at many tables, a name that shows both sides.

Which names in this list come from the Player's Handbook?

Twenty-four of them. Ten are elven family names (Amakiir, Amastacia, Galanodel, Holimion, Ilphelkiir, Liadon, Meliamne, Nailo, Siannodel, Xiloscient), eight are Common translations of those names (Gemflower, Starflower, Diamonddew, Gemblossom, Silverfrond, Oakenheel, Moonbrook, Goldpetal) and six are human surnames (Amblecrown, Buckman, Dundragon, Evenwood, Greycastle, Tallstag). The rest are ordinary real-world surnames or names made up for this page, none of them is presented as canon, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.

What is a good last name for a half-elf raised by humans?

An inherited surname such as Thornbury or Wainwright is the plainest choice and lets the character blend in. For a family with an elven grandparent, a softened name such as Merrin keeps a trace of the old name, and a foundling raised by a temple might be a Sevenbells or a Gatefound.

How do I use an "of" name such as of the Border Fords?

It follows the given name in place of a family name, with a lowercase "of". It suits characters from a border village or a forest-edge settlement where nobody keeps family names, and it can be swapped later for an earned byname such as Farwalker or Trucebearer.
