Hag Name Generator

Hags occupy a specific corner of folklore: they are the old women who live at the edge of the village, the swamp or the wood, and who bargain, curse and eat children. Britain gave us Black Annis of the Dane Hills, Jenny Greenteeth and Peg Powler who drag bathers under the water, and the winter-bringing Cailleach. Slavic lands gave us Baba Yaga with her chicken-legged hut and iron teeth, Germany Frau Perchta and Frau Holle, Iceland the child-eating Grýla, Japan the mountain hag Yama-uba, and Greece the Graeae, Lamia and the witch Erichtho. These names are the bedrock of the type.

Dungeons & Dragons codified the modern hag with green hags, sea hags, night hags, annis hags and bheur hags, and its naming style is now the default: a homely kinship title (Auntie, Granny, Grandmother, Mother, Goody, Nanny) followed by an unpleasant epithet, as in Auntie Ethel from Baldur's Gate 3, Auntie Greenteeth, Granny Nightshade or Grandmother Ninefingers. The friendly title makes the cruelty land harder. Hags also collect nicknames from frightened villagers (Skinny Meg, One-Eyed Ida, the Woman Under the Bridge) and, when they form a coven, adopt shared titles like Coven Mother or Sister.

A good hag name feels like something a child would whisper about, so it should be easy to say and hard to forget.
