Generate Spartan names from the real roll of Lacedaemon: kings like Leonidas and Agesilaos, generals like Brasidas and Lysander, Spartan women like Gorgo and Kyniska, plus Doric-flavored original names and full forms with patronymics and epithets for fiction, games and team names.

About spartan names

Spartan names are Greek names with a Doric accent. Where an Athenian was Demosthenes or Aristodemos, a Spartan was Damonon or Aristodamos, because Doric kept the long a that Attic turned into e. That is why so many real Spartans end in -as rather than -es: Leonidas, Brasidas, Pausanias, Antalkidas, Kallikratidas. The rest of the toolkit is shared Greek: a name is two roots joined together, and Spartan families favoured roots about war and rule, such as Archi- and -archos (lead), Nik- (victory), Kleo- (fame), Agesi- (leader), Leo- (lion), Eury- (wide), Damo- (people) and -machos (fighter).

The name alone was rarely enough. Spartans were written as 'X son of Y' (Leonidas son of Anaxandridas), and the famous ones picked up an epithet: Aristodemos the Trembler, who survived Thermopylae in disgrace; Agesilaos the Lame King; Kleombrotos, who lost at Leuktra. Spartan women, unusually, were named in the sources too: Gorgo the queen, Kyniska the first woman to win at Olympia, Argileonis, who asked whether her dead son Brasidas had any equals.

This list mixes attested Spartans from the kings' lists, Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon and Plutarch with original names assembled from the same Doric roots, so a fictional hoplite, a wargame general or a sports team can sound like Lacedaemon without borrowing a king.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Prefer Doric -as and -damos endings over -es and -demos if you want a name to read as Spartan rather than generically Greek: Agesidamos, Lysidamos, Eudamidas, Anaxandridas.
  • Give a full name as 'X son of Y' for formal or historical use, and add an epithet only when it tells a story: Dienekes of the Three Hundred, Pantites the Messenger, Megistias the Seer.
  • For rank, use real Spartan terms instead of 'captain': an enomotarch led a platoon, a lochagos a battalion, a harmost governed a conquered city, a navarch commanded the fleet, and the five ephors ran the state.
  • Spartan women's names follow the same roots as men's with -a or -is endings (Gorgo, Chilonis, Timaia, Agesistrata, Kratesikleia), and the sources record them more often than for any other Greek city, so use them freely.
  • If you want Halo's Spartan super-soldiers rather than ancient Greeks, those follow a different pattern (name plus service number); use the Halo Spartan name generator linked below.

Frequently asked questions

What are famous Spartan names?

Leonidas, the king who died at Thermopylae; Dienekes, who joked about fighting in the shade; Brasidas and Lysander, the great generals of the Peloponnesian War; Agesilaos and Kleomenes, reforming kings; Pausanias, victor at Plataea; Lykourgos, the lawgiver; and the women Gorgo, Kyniska and Chilonis.

What makes a name sound Spartan?

Doric spelling. Spartans kept the long a where Athenians used e, so -damos instead of -demos and -as instead of -es, giving names like Leonidas, Brasidas and Eudamidas. Martial roots such as nik- (victory), kleo- (fame), agesi- (leader) and -machos (fighter) add the right tone.

Did Spartans have last names?

No. A Spartan was identified by his father's name ('Leonidas son of Anaxandridas') and sometimes by his royal house, Agiad or Eurypontid, or an epithet earned in life. This generator gives both plain names and full patronymic forms.

What were Spartan female names like?

Spartan women bore names from the same roots as the men, feminised: Gorgo, Kyniska, Archidamia, Agesistrata, Timaia, Kratesikleia, Lampito. Because Spartan women owned property and spoke in public, more of their names survive than from Athens, and the list includes dozens of them.
