Generate demigod names from Greek, Roman, Norse, Hindu, Celtic and Mesoamerican myth, plus original half-divine heroes in the same style, from ancient Greek given names to modern Percy Jackson-style demigods. Ideal for novels, D&D characters and mythology OCs.

About demigod names

Demigods are the mortal children of gods, and their names almost always belong to the mortal side. Heracles, Perseus, Theseus, Achilles and Aeneas are ordinary Greek heroic names built from everyday roots: Heracles is "glory of Hera", Perseus likely "destroyer", Theseus "the one who sets in place". The divine parent shows up in the story, not the name. The same holds elsewhere: Cú Chulainn, son of Lugh, is "the hound of Culann"; Arjuna, son of Indra, is "bright" or "silver"; Maui and Gilgamesh are simply names. A convincing demigod name therefore sounds like a person of its culture first and a legend second.

That gives you three workable styles. Canon names from mythology (Orpheus, Sarpedon, Romulus, Hunahpu) carry instant weight. Invented names built from real ancient Greek elements (Kallias, Lysandra, Nikandros, Eurynome) fit a classical setting without colliding with a famous hero. And modern demigods in the Percy Jackson tradition use everyday first-and-last names, sometimes with a quiet mythological echo in the given name (Cassia Reyes, Orion Castellanos, Delphine Okafor).

The list below mixes all three, along with a smaller set of epithet names (Hektor Sunborn, Thaleia Wavecrest) for characters whose divine parentage is public knowledge.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the divine parent is a secret: hidden parentage suits a plain mortal name, while an epithet like Sunborn or Tidesinger only makes sense once the world knows.
  • Match the name's language to the pantheon. A child of Odin should not have a Greek -os ending, and a child of Poseidon should not be called Ragnar.
  • For original Greek-style demigods, avoid the exact names of major heroes (Heracles, Achilles, Perseus) so readers do not expect the original myth.
  • Modern demigods work best with names that could appear on a school register; let one subtle mythic echo (Orion, Phoebe, Atlas) carry the hint.
  • If you are writing a Roman demigod, use the Roman forms (Pollux not Polydeuces, Hercules not Heracles) to keep the setting consistent.

Frequently asked questions

What is a demigod?

A demigod is a being with one divine parent and one mortal parent, or more loosely any half-divine hero. Greek examples include Heracles, Perseus, Achilles and Helen; other cultures have Cú Chulainn, Arjuna, Gilgamesh, Maui and the Maya Hero Twins.

Do demigod names follow any rules?

Not formally. In myth they are normal names of their culture, usually given by the mortal parent. The divine connection is revealed by the story, by an epithet (Heracles means glory of Hera) or by a patronymic such as 'son of Zeus' rather than by the name itself.

Can I use these names for a Percy Jackson OC?

Yes. The modern first-and-last names in the list are written for exactly that: realistic contemporary names with a light mythological echo, which is how Rick Riordan names his demigods. Pair one with a godly parent and cabin number and you have a character.

Are these names only Greek?

No. The core is Greek and Roman because that is what most people search for, but the list also includes demigods from Norse, Hindu, Celtic, Mesopotamian, Polynesian and Maya myth, and original names that suit any pantheon.
