Creepy Town Name Generator

A creepy town name works by sounding ordinary first. Real American towns are named for a feature and a fact: a creek, a fork, a mill, a family, the thing that happened there. Hangman's Bluff, Poor Farm Road and Coffin Gap all follow that pattern, which is why they read as places you could drive through rather than as jokes. English villages do the same with old endings like -by, -wick, -mere and -thorpe, so Sallowmere or Corpsewick sound like they have been on the Ordnance Survey map for a thousand years. The creepiness comes from one word that should not be there.

The second trick is implication. Names that record a disaster in plain language (Shaft Seven, Cholera Crossing, Old Colliery) are more disturbing than anything with blood or death in it, and names that are aggressively pleasant (Kindly Hollow, Little Comfort, Sunny Acres) set up a town whose friendliness is the horror. Abandoned industry, sickness, churches, poison plants, carrion birds and failed farms are all rich seams, because real places really were named for these things.
