Generate Gerudo names in the style of Urbosa, Riju, Nabooru and the vai of Gerudo Town: short, sun-warm names with the North African and Arabic-inspired sound Nintendo uses for its desert people.

About gerudo names

The Gerudo are the desert people of the Legend of Zelda series, an almost all-female tribe of tall, red-haired warriors who live in Gerudo Town and, once every hundred years, produce a single male who becomes their king. Their names reflect that setting. Nintendo gives them short, open, sun-warm names with an Arabic and North African flavor: Urbosa, Riju, Nabooru, Buliara, Aveil, Rotana. Most end in a vowel or a soft h, most are two or three syllables, and hard consonant clusters are rare.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom fleshed out the town with dozens of named vai (women): guards like Barta and Teake, shopkeepers like Kohm and Ashai, jeweler Isha, cooks like Rotana and Ruma. Older games contributed Nabooru, Aveil and the witches Koume and Kotake, plus Ganondorf, the only canon Gerudo voe (man). The Gerudo language itself, with words like sav'otta, sarqso, vai, voe and vasaaq, gives you a template for coining new names that sound at home in the desert.

The list opens with canon Gerudo characters and continues with original names built on the same phonetics, so you can pick a name for a Zelda OC, a tabletop character in a Hyrule campaign, or a fan-fiction Gerudo who needs to sound like she grew up under the same sun as Urbosa.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Nearly all Gerudo are women, so if you are naming a man he is either Ganondorf's generation or a Hylian voe living in Kara Kara Bazaar; pick accordingly.
  • Keep names to two or three syllables ending in a, i, o or ah (Riju, Buliara, Romah); longer or consonant-ending names read as Hylian or Sheikah instead.
  • For a chief or noble, consider a two-part name like Makeela Riju, where the first part is a family or clan name and the second is the given name.
  • Borrow syllables from Gerudo vocabulary (sav, sarq, vai, vasaaq) to make an invented name feel like it belongs to the same language.
  • Check the Zelda wiki for NPC names before finalizing so your OC does not accidentally share a name with a Gerudo Town shopkeeper.

Frequently asked questions

What do Gerudo names sound like?

They are short, vowel-rich names with an Arabic and North African feel, usually two or three syllables ending in a soft vowel: Urbosa, Riju, Nabooru, Buliara, Aveil, Rotana.

Are there male Gerudo names?

Only one male Gerudo is born every hundred years and becomes king, so the only canon male name is Ganondorf. Hylian men who visit the desert, like Bozai and Vilia, have ordinary Hylian names.

Which names in this list are canon Zelda characters?

The first sixty or so are canon Gerudo from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, including Urbosa, Riju, Nabooru, Aveil, Buliara, Koume and Kotake. The rest are original names in the same style.

Can I use a Gerudo name for a D&D or original fantasy character?

Yes. The original names here are not tied to Nintendo's characters, and their desert-warrior sound works well for any sun-baked, matriarchal or nomadic culture in your own setting.
