Generate German kingdom names for fiction, alternate history, map games and tabletop campaigns: invented realms like Königreich Falkenmark, Herzogtum Rabenstein, Fürstentum Lindenau-Hohenwerth, Hansestadt Möwenhaven and Freistaat Oberweser, English forms like Electorate of Kronenwerth, plus real historical states such as Königreich Bayern and the Electorate of Mainz.

About German kingdom names

For most of its history Germany was not one unified state. The Holy Roman Empire was a patchwork of several hundred territories: electorates, duchies, counties, prince-bishoprics, imperial abbeys and free imperial cities, each with its own ruler and title. Even the German Empire of 1871 still held four kingdoms (Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony and Württemberg) beside grand duchies, duchies, principalities and three free Hanseatic cities. So a convincing German-style realm can be a Königreich, a Herzogtum, a Grafschaft or a Freie Reichsstadt, and this list mixes them all.

The names are compounds. A first word from heraldry, landscape or a ruler's name joins an ending such as -berg (mountain), -burg (castle), -stein (rock), -wald (forest), -furt (ford), -brunn (spring) or -mark (border land), which gives Königreich Falkenmark or Grafschaft Eberbrunn. Hyphenated names such as Fürstentum Lindenau-Hohenwerth copy the way ruling houses split into lines named after their seats, as Hesse did with Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt.

The list runs from kingdoms, duchies and electorates through counties, margraviates, church lands and Hanseatic city-states to early tribal realms, alpine and coastal styles and modern free states, in German and in English. About one name in fourteen is a real historical state, such as Königreich Bayern or the Electorate of Mainz. The rest are invented.

How to choose German kingdom names

  • Match the rank to the size. A Königreich or Kurfürstentum suits a major power, a Herzogtum or Großherzogtum a large province, a Grafschaft or Landgrafschaft a smaller territory, a Markgrafschaft a border land and a Freie Reichsstadt a single self-governing city.
  • German titles take no preposition: it is Herzogtum Rabenstein, not Herzogtum von Rabenstein. The English form adds one, Duchy of Rabenstein. The German form looks right on a map, and the English one is easier to say at the table.
  • Split a dynasty to fill a map quickly. Keep one house name and give each branch its own seat, the way the list pairs Sachsen-Lindenhain with Sachsen-Rabeneck. Neighbors with a shared first half read as cousins and rivals at a glance.
  • Keep one region's sound together. Endings such as -wik, -förde, -siel and -haven belong on the coast, -joch, -alp and -kogel in the high mountains, and river names like Weser, Lahn and Isar suit modern free states.
  • If your keyboard or game font has no umlauts, use the standard spellings ae, oe and ue for ä, ö and ü, and ss for ß. Koenigreich and Grossherzogtum are accepted substitute spellings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the German word for kingdom?

Kingdom is Königreich. Grand duchy is Großherzogtum, duchy is Herzogtum, principality is Fürstentum, electorate is Kurfürstentum, county is Grafschaft and free state is Freistaat. The title comes first with no linking word, as in Königreich Falkenmark or Kurfürstentum Sonnental.

Are these real German states?

A small share are. Königreich Bayern, Königreich Sachsen, Großherzogtum Baden, the Electorate of Mainz, the Margraviate of Meissen and Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg are real. Names such as Herzogtum Rabenstein, Grafschaft Eberbrunn and Hansestadt Möwenhaven are invented, and the modern-style free states, like Freistaat Oberweser, join real rivers and hill ranges into states that never existed. German compounds are so productive that an invented name can still match a real village or castle, so search it if that matters for your project.

Why do so many German states have hyphenated names?

Ruling houses often divided their lands among heirs, and each line was named after the house plus its residence. That produced real states such as Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Hesse-Kassel and Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Invented names in the list, such as Hessen-Falkenrode and Fürstentum Lindenau-Hohenwerth, follow the same pattern.

How do I make up my own German kingdom name?

Pick a heraldic animal, a tree, a landscape word or a ruler's first name, add a place ending, then put a title in front. Falke plus Mark gives Falkenmark, and with a title it becomes Königreich Falkenmark. Watch the linking letters: Linde becomes Linden- and Friedrich becomes Friedrichs- before the ending.
