French Kingdom Name Generator
Royaumes, duchies and counties with a French sound
Generate French-sounding kingdom names for fantasy maps and alternate history: invented realms like Valmontois, Royaume de Roncevois and Duchy of Aurelais, poetic forms like Royaume des Sept Vallées, Occitan and Breton styles like Comtat de Peyrolac and Bro Kervalen, plus real medieval realms such as Neustria, Septimania and the County of Toulouse.
About French kingdom names
Medieval France was less a single kingdom than a patchwork of them. The king in Paris ruled directly over a small royal domain, while great vassals held the Duchy of Normandy, the Duchy of Aquitaine, the County of Toulouse, the County of Champagne and dozens of smaller fiefs. Earlier still, the Frankish lands were divided into Neustria, Austrasia, Burgundy and Aquitaine. That is why a convincing French-style realm can be a royaume, a duché, a comté, a vicomté or a simple seigneurie, and why this list mixes all of them.
French region names have recognizable endings. Many grew out of a Latin adjective for a tribe or town and end in -ois or -ais (Valois, Vermandois, Gâtinais), so invented names like Valmontois, Aurelais and Garenois sound right at once. Other families use -agne and -ogne (Champagne, Bourgogne), -ie (Normandie, Picardie) or descriptive compounds with mont, val, roche, bois and châtel. The south follows Occitan habits, with -ac endings and titles such as comtat and vescomtat (Comtat de Peyrolac). Brittany uses Breton words: ker for a settlement, plou for a parish, bro for a country (Bro Kervalen).
About one name in seven is a real historical realm, from Septimania to the Viscounty of Béarn. The rest are invented, in French, English, Occitan, Breton and a little medieval Latin.
How to choose French kingdom names
- Choose the rank to fit the size. A royaume or kingdom suits a sovereign realm, a duché a powerful province, a comté or vicomté a smaller fief inside it, a marche or marquisat a border territory, and a seigneurie a single castle with its villages.
- Mind the small words when you adapt a name. French uses de before a consonant (Royaume de Roncevois), d' before a vowel (Royaume d'Aquilanie) and des for plurals (Royaume des Brumes).
- Keep one region's sound together. Put -ac and Roque- names in your southern lands, Ker- and Plou- names on the western peninsula and -court, -ville and -bec names in the north, the way the real map does.
- Use the French form on the map and an English form in narration. Duché de la Haute Forêt looks right in a cartouche; Duchy of the High Forest is easier to say aloud at the table.
- For alternate history, pick a real realm that vanished, such as Lotharingia, Septimania or the Kingdom of Arles, and ask what would have happened if it had lasted.
Frequently asked questions
What is the French word for kingdom?
Kingdom is royaume, duchy is duché, county is comté, viscounty is vicomté and lordship is seigneurie. In the Occitan-speaking south the equivalents are reialme, ducat, comtat and vescomtat, which is why the list includes names like Comtat de Peyrolac and Ducat de Valdurac.
Are these real French kingdoms?
Some are. Neustria, Austrasia, Lotharingia, the Kingdom of Arles, the Duchy of Normandy and the County of Toulouse are genuine medieval realms. Names like Valmontois, Royaume de Roncevois and Principality of Montjoie are invented on French patterns. France has tens of thousands of communes, so an invented name can still coincide with a small real village; search it if that matters for your project.
How do I make up my own French kingdom name?
Start with a landscape or heraldic word (mont, val, roche, lys, cerf, faucon), add a regional ending such as -ois, -ais, -agne or -ie, then put a title in front. Val plus mont plus -ois gives Valmontois, and with a title it becomes Royaume de Valmontois.
Can I use these names for D&D, a novel or a strategy game?
Yes. The invented names suit any setting with a French-inspired culture, from a chivalric fantasy kingdom to a musketeer-era duchy. Poetic forms such as Royaume des Sept Vallées and Marche des Brumes also work well as in-world names that you translate for your players or readers.
