About celtic kingdom names

Real Celtic kingdoms were rarely named after a king or a capital. Irish over-kingdoms took the name of a people or a dynasty, so Dál Riata means the share of Riata's folk, Ulaid is simply the Ulstermen, and Uí Néill is the descendants of Niall. Welsh and Brittonic kingdoms like Gwynedd, Powys, Rheged and Gododdin were often named for a region or tribe, and the Picts divided Fortriu, Fib, Cait and Ce into a handful of provinces. Brittany used Bro, a country or district, as in Bro Waroch.

In Irish, Ríocht is a kingdom, Tír a land, Dún a fort and Ráth or Lios a ringfort seat, so Ríocht na nGleann is the Kingdom of the Glens and Tír na mBeann the Land of the Peaks. In Welsh, Teyrnas is a kingdom, Gwlad a country, Caer a fortress and Ynys an island, giving Teyrnas Eryri or Gwlad y Niwl, the Land of the Mist. Scottish Gaelic uses Rìoghachd, and Breton Rouantelezh.

For an English-language setting, translate rather than transliterate: Kingdom of the Nine Glens, Kingdom of the Red Branch or Kingdom of the Standing Stones reads as Celtic without a pronunciation guide. The list mixes attested kingdoms, cantrefs and tribal realms with original names that follow the same grammar.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the realm after its people or founding dynasty (Dál Riata, Uí Néill, Eóganachta) rather than its capital; that is how most real Celtic kingdoms worked.
  • Keep one language per region: Irish Ríocht, Tír and Dún names in one corner of the map, Welsh Teyrnas, Caer and Gwlad names in another, so each culture sounds distinct.
  • Use small units for texture: a Welsh cantref, an Irish túath or a Scottish mormaerdom makes a believable vassal under a larger kingdom.
  • For an over-king, borrow the Irish model of provinces under a High King at Tara: a Fifth of Connacht, a Fifth of Munster, and a High Kingdom above them.
  • If players will say the name aloud, prefer Caer Morwen or Kingdom of the Black Loch over names with lenited consonants like Ríocht Bhréifne.

Frequently asked questions

What were the real Celtic kingdoms?

Ireland had the five provinces of Ulaid, Connacht, Laigin, Mumu and Mide under a High King at Tara, with dynastic kingdoms like Dál Riata, Uí Néill and Osraige. Wales had Gwynedd, Powys, Dyfed, Deheubarth and Morgannwg; the Old North had Rheged, Gododdin, Elmet and Strathclyde; the Picts had Fortriu and Circinn; and Gaul had tribal kingdoms like the Arverni and Aedui.

What is the difference between Ríocht, Teyrnas and Rìoghachd?

They all mean kingdom: Ríocht is Irish, Teyrnas is Welsh, Rìoghachd is Scottish Gaelic and Rouantelezh is Breton. Using the right one tells readers which Celtic culture a realm belongs to.

Do I need to use the accents and special letters?

For authenticity, yes: the fada in Dún and Tír, the Welsh ŵ in Gŵyr and the ll and dd sounds are part of the spelling. For a fantasy setting you can drop them (Dun Morna, Tir Connla) and readers will still hear the Celtic flavor.

Can I use the historical names in my own world?

Historical and mythological names like Gwynedd, Dál Riata, Annwn or Tír na nÓg are public domain and free to use, though readers who know them will bring associations. The original names on the list are free to use anywhere without that baggage.
