Djinn Name Generator

Jinn (singular jinni, Anglicized as djinn or genie) are the beings of 'smokeless fire' in Arabic tradition, older than humanity and living alongside it. Their names in folklore come from three main sources. Religious and grimoire literature names Iblis, the fallen jinni, and the seven Jinn Kings assigned to the days of the week: Al-Mudhhib (Sunday), Murrah (Monday), Al-Ahmar the Red King (Tuesday), Barqan (Wednesday), Shamhurish (Thursday), Zawba'a the Whirlwind (Friday) and Maymun (Saturday). The Thousand and One Nights adds jinn characters like Dahnash, Maymunah daughter of Al-Dimiryat, and Sakhr, the jinni who stole Solomon's ring.

Jinn also come in classes that double as names in fiction: Marid (powerful sea-jinn, the classic wish-granter), Ifrit (fiery and rebellious), Ghul (desert shapeshifter), Si'lat, Hinn, Nasnas and the personal Qarin. Persian tradition contributes the div, giant demons of the Shahnameh such as the White Div and Akvan.

Because jinn are Arabic-speaking in most stories, original names sound right when they follow Arabic patterns: a root word for wind, fire, smoke or night (Duhan, Lahab, Samum, Layl, Sarab, Zulmat), a patronymic with ibn or bint, a color-king title with Al- (Al-Aswad, Al-Azraq), or a kunya like Abu Duhan (father of smoke). Add a place epithet, such as Ifrit of the Brass City or Warden of the Mountain Qaf, for a jinni tied to a location.
